Ultimate Hunting Gun {Smith & Wesson Performance Center 500}

That is a hell of a gun bigred :)

And again, looking at their literature:
We all grew up hearing the phrase, "Faster than a speeding bullet...," but not when it is fired from Smith & Wesson's new Model 460XVR, with the highest muzzle velocity of any production revolver on earth. The Model 460XVR is so revolutionary that it required an entirely new designation...XVR, X-treme Velocity Revolver.

Another company that markets their gun as one that goes to eleven. These guys know what the market thinks like, and the know that the perception is that 'faster kills better', even if it's just a little.

So with the brake - how is it to shoot? Compared to a 44 for example.

To be honest I don't have a lot of experiance with other big revolvers, this is my first one. I find it quite manageable with the 350 grn bullets I've shot out of it to date. I have some heavier bullets (500 grn) and even though Johnn has been kind enough to pass on the load data, I haven't had time to load any. I also have a mold for 400 grn that I will be playing with at some point with the dream of taming this down enough for the indoor range ... something with trail boss maybe ..

Now while my experiance is quite limited, those at our local range that have fired this and have the breadth and depth of knowledge to offer a meaningful comparison say they are pleasantly surprised, that the recoil is not a vicious as they predicted it would be and that they have dealt with a lot worse recoil on other guns. They have also found it to be very accurate. One lucky shot nailed the iron pig at 150 yards and the 100 yard gong has been rung on more than one occasion.

Ok, well that's good news at least.

The 'challenge' of course in restricting handgun hunting to firearms of this type is you're restricting the sport to people who have a few bucks to throw down on the table for a 'dedicated purpose built hunting gun'. That will weed out a lot of folk, all those except the more dedicated people who want to handgun hunt.

Mind you, a clever poster mentioned to me the other day that this may have a benefit: People who paid a lot for their guns are less likely to screw around and not take the sport seriously or risk having them taken away, so it will likely mean fewer problems in the field. Some twit can't buy a 300 dollar used peice of garbage, practice with a box of ammo and go out in the feild blasting away - anyone who spends more than a grand on their hardware is likely to be taking it pretty seriously.

Interesting theory - probably has some truth to it.

Almost 17 years later, still plinking with the 500 and now on the hunt for a BHA lever (or similar) also in 500 S&W. I think the revolver and lever would make a nice couple but it looks like it's going to be a long time finding one ...

Found one! It was hiding in Quebec. Should be here in a couple weeks. Would have liked a stainless one but can't wait a year for a special order.

Goes with this. Mine is a little different in that it has non-fluted cylinder. It came with a picatinny rail which I may some day use if I mount an optic on it.

Congrats sir ! You won’t be disappointed.
That’s the exact model I have and it’s an amazing gun.
If you don’t mind me asking, what did it set you back? You’re welcome to message me if you don’t want to post on here.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised how nicely that rail helps line up your irons for quick follow up shots. They grooved out the centre of it to line up perfectly with the skinners.

I don't mind you asking the price at all. I went cheap (relatively speaking lol) , it was $3750. That's with what they call #2 grade stock. Fancy wood ups the price by at least $1000 and quite frankly, the difference in wood is not that great, both are walnut offerings ... I would have figured for the $$ fancy wood it would have been birds eye maple or something stunning .. not just a "little" nicer walnut. But hey, in todays market beggars can't be choosers lol, I'm just thrilled I could find one period.

*** Checked shipping updates 01/31/2024 (Canada Post) .... it's in my Province and getting closer ... ***
