Ultra-compact takedowns

Goes together and apart in 5seconds. Takes chokes. FO iron sights. Rail to mount an optic. Fits in a daypack.

Sure they market is as a "tactical" gimmick, but it actually makes an excellent super compact, takedown hunting/bear defence shotgun. That's what I use it for.

 
Is there a compact rifled 12 or 20 gauge that would shoot sabotaged slugs accurately? Something like the H&R rifled slug gun, but with a shorter barrel?

Remington's Accutip Bonded Slug is .58 cal ("Huge .58-caliber slug is the largest tipped slug available today") .. the .500 S&W available in a T/C 20 inch barrel is quite a bit more energetic and I would say is "pretty close" to the slug diameter. You can get a .500 S&W in a shorter barrel for the T/C if you wish .. but the lack of any appreciable action length on the T/C Encore .. makes a surprisingly short and handy package that has to be tried to really appreciate.

I saw a nice SxS 12g with rifled bores in the mid '90's at Kettner in Mannheim, but I can't remember the manufacturer. It was designed for hunting driven boar, was compact and had good open sights.
 
Have been thinking about the length requirements lately and figured someone in the world must have tried a two piece barrel. Have been unable to find any info. This is what I am thinking - take the BLR I mentioned earlier in a takedown with folding stock. Now get your hands on a barrel blank for that rifle, cut it at 9 or 10 inches, thread it female/male to be able to join it up again with a tight fit or use a system similar system to high end takedown rifles where you mate the two pieces and twist lock them together. After all that, drill and rifle the barrel and prepare the chamber for your desired caliber. You could then profile the barrel to what you wish, cut the outside piece to keep the gov happy with a 18.5 barrel length and install a front sight if scope is not an option. A bit far fetched, but I think not impossible. Total piece length would be 12 or less. Four pieces or three if stock is folding and not detachable.

And then someone will blow the theory out of the water by stating that the barrel must consist of at least one piece longer then 18 inches.

Or just say it can be done and explain how. Any gunsmiths out there with barrel experience. Maybe someone could try it, the barrel part anyway...

Now, must find a way to join the barrel pieces... Off to google I go.
 
I'd actually been mulling the two piece barrel too NL, mediocre minds think alike and all that. Getting a seal wouldn't be hard using stainless, anyone who's used swageloc knows the drill. Considered either rifling indexed to match (would be easiest with an octagon barrel, mate the flats, and machine so the rifling is seamless), or the reamed to groove diameter second half, unrifled, which would be very easy and still net velocity gains. For a true "pocket fisherman" rifle meant to be packed more than shot, could be something to it.
 
Thinking the barrel might have to be a little heavier in the join area, could even build in a handle. Twist lock with octagon barrel and indexing a possibility. Threaded Barrel extension would probably be best if you drilled the barrel after cut/join/shape. Hard to believe it has not been tried.

Must try to mock up something...
 
I think you would have to tread carefully around the legalities of a two-piece barrel. If the rifle could be fired without both pieces, you might cross a line somewhere.
 
Hmm, okay now. A 2 piece smoothbore shotgun barrel. I suppose if you were clever you could make the threads for the chokes and the barrel section the same, so that you could either string together multiple sections or cap it off with a choke. Say, 10 or 12 inch sections...

Hmm...now I'm curious.

Thats an Encore/Prohunter not a Contender a 600 Nitro would be a bit much for a Contender...

In 20 or 12 GA, carry slugs and shot, that way you could vary the diet with a bit of bird as well...
