Ultra lightweight hunting ?

I don't think anyone shood be shooting off hand past a 100 yards regardless of rifle
Ther is always a rock or stump or dropping to one knee or go prone ther is alway sumthing to rest a rifle on
Shooting off hand is for Close range work wen split-second makes a difference

Every single shooter has their own personal capabilities and should be self aware of their outer limitations.
Please don't impose your very own singular opinion, as the gold standard for every other hunter in this universe.

Cheers

Shooting off hand is the worse shooting position though very necessary sum times at closer ranges 100 yards or less
any Hunter that don't practice shooting off hand is crazy any Hunter who thinks he can accurately shoot 400 yards off hand is full of BS
I only shoot off hand if there is no way to get a more stable shooting position and with in reasonable rang sum hunters can shoot well enough maybe 200 but I have never seen it personally find it unlikely
The best Hunter I know is from a small Indian village just out side of hazleton BC he can shoot off his hip with a 30-30 out to 100 yards and never miss but he is The exception and Evan he would not take a off hand shot past a 100 yards
Any one shooting off hand past 100 maybe 200 yard for a exceptional shorter with higher shooting abilities after that it is not hunting but just taking pot shots And hopping for the best
Ardent and Hoyt would know more about the average Hunter Shooting abilities seeing how they are in the babysitting business

Kind of touchy?

I try to always use the very best rest I can find depending on the circumstances. That usually means that I never shoot off hand unless I'm VERY rushed, and the shot is close. If a deer is 200 yards away, I always have time to find something solid, and try to do so. I almost always carry a pair of crossed sticks, or as carverk said, there's rocks, trees, stumps, kneeling, sitting (prone is hardly ever possible) but I agree with carverk that no one should be shooting off hand at much over 100 yards even if you believe you can hit targets well enough. If I see a hunter grabbing a makeshift rest rather than banging away off hand, I think, "He has done it before and knows how to shoot".

Game animals are not paper, and a hunter should take only those shots of which he is certain, and even certain shots will get missed or turn out badly at times. Many times only some sort of rest can provide enough certainty, and even if you're the world's best off hand shot, try to use a rest of some sort if at all possible.

That's no slight at anyone's shooting ability, it's just good hunting advice.

^So that's your wonderful come back Carverk??

260 yards, off hand, only one 150 grain Winchester Silvertip required.
About 0930 AM, 22nd of November 2005.

And yes, I practiced a lot before the hunting season.
I also like to experiment at 50 and 100 yards with my 22 rimfire Hammerli target pistol in the off season. 50 meter formal matches thrown into this mix. Which is all single handed off-hand 60 scored shots, just like my avatar.
Once a year, several close shooting friends, we gather for a 1000 yard informal match with our best target rifles. Lots of pre-match shooting for this special one too.

Your results may vary from mine.
Have a nice day.

260 yards off hand make me think pot shot and you got lucky brighter note It is a nice buck
I Would give you $100 if you can make a 1000 yard shoot off hand first shot 8 inch target

Yup... this is going to go sideways fast...

I know I'm no Long range Hunter I know wear my limits is and work with in that range
Hell if I can stretch my shooting out to 300 yards to take advantage of the point black range in ideal situation on a good rest I would be a happy man but for now 200 yard max and under a 100 yards off hand is my limit
I know sum of the Prairie boys can shoot out to incredible ranges but off hand why

Back on subject do any budy have experience with Expad down sleeping bags the not the lightest but ther waterproof and can be used with out a Bivi not bad for 3 lbs would not be bad for a late fall winter bag

I fear that your attempt to "right" the train on the tracks may fall short...

Now you are sounding even more ridiculous. A lesser person would take some offence to your words.
Did I say I would attempt 1000 yards off hand? No. This is your own foolish statement.
I know my own capabilities and limits. I also know of this obscure to Carverk concept called high sight in.

Please educate yourself before opening your mouth.

I agree with this. That's pretty well my style too.

As for the other discussions on here, no comment.

That's correct. Don't engage here at all or you will be labeled a pot shot from someone who cannot even spell at Grade 8 level.
