Ultra short barrels, do they have a use ?

The only reason it slips is because it doesn't fit my hand properly because of the swell at the base. Once I sand it flat I won't have an issue. No strap needed.
I find the straps a hinderance on factory equipped stocks

Push-pull and sucking up the recoil with both arms is best for me with a birdshead.

My reaction is very close shooting . Bears in the tent come to mind . Carrying a bear defence
gun when an ATC is not avalable. General shooting is terrible .

Depends how skittish hares are in your next of the wood... at 20y, a short barrel will do just fine. As long as you know where your pattern is hitting.

I’ve shot grouse with 12.5” and IM or full chokes out to 30y easily, hare’s from 5’-25y. Although I prefer to use a .22 on hare, they will hide in the thick brush on the side of the trail sometimes so getting close isn’t hard.

True. If you had a 28" barrel your gun would be 16" closer to the rabbit when you shoot!

Whole gun is short enough that you could chuck the whole thing like a spear.

Ok for short range and sh*ts n giggles. Its handy on the farm for late spring when the bears are about, but hopefully you just need to make noise rather than shoot one.

I've picked up and held one or two of the sxs short barrels, they are like picking up a heavy lead pipe. Too heavy to carry in a back pack.


I have a short 870 or 870 clone that holds 4+1. Three 12g slugs followed by two Hail Mary 000 buckshot.

Never tried a Carlson but I know the tightwad in a mossberg 500 has dropped 3 turkeys so far for me and gives great patterns out to 50yrds with winchester double x number 4s and number 5s

Now i want to see how it does in the sulun for run and gun style hunting (id pretty much have to be leaning out of my blind if i used it in there lol)
