I have handled the micro midas in Cables and wholesale sports, locally, fits very good;
these two store do not have the ruger hawkeye compact...so I cant try ...
wondering if anybody near Nanaimo has one for me to take a look??

which is better?

The Micro Midas, does not fit me at all... feels like a toy... whereas, the Ruger feels like a solid, scaled down rifle... feels even better with an adult stock on it. I prefer the overall feel and handling of the Frontier to the Compact... a little heavier barrel, gives it the feel of a 20" barrel, but at only 16.5".. but sionce the Frontier is not made anymore, you would have to scour the used market for one;

I don't like either of those to be honest.

You can always re barrel any bolt action rifle with a new barrel of any length so long as the OAL stays at 26" or more. This is what I plan to do since nobody makes what I want really

no, with re-barreling, you can not go under 18 inch barrel---since re-barreling is also "modification"; the only way to go under 18 inch is the factory config...

wrong.

A new manufactured barrel is legal and will allow the firearm to retain it's NR status provided it remains 26" or more OAL, cutting down a longer factory barrel to under 18" makes it restricted regardless of OAL.

A barrel replacement is not a "modification" to the factory barrel
