Ultralight bolt action - build one? Or just buy a Howa Superlite?

Heres another good option except its in 6.5 Need-More-Speed ;) they also have one in 20" barrel 6.5 thats 2oz more than that one so you'll gain a little velocity.

And finally, this pretty well fits the bill, 308 win, carbon barrel, etc (pipe a little long....but) youre basically getting a custom rifle at factory pricing......

Wow that 308 is gorgeous šŸ˜

And a screaming deal imo. Like I said essentially a custom rifle at factory pricing. Those AG Composite stocks are $1600 here alone here now. Im even debating grabbing one for future projects. Just rip the barrel off and re-barrel it to something I'd prefer.

Kinda hoping I wake up tomorrow and it's out of stock cause the OP bought...saves me $2400 lol

Build the custom rifle if you want something 1 of a kind. I own most of what you have listed and a couple lightweight builds myself.
Hey that's some really amazing advice. I didn't realize the other titanium actions, or a Paradigm stock even existed - those could save even more weight.

As for 4x max magnification, that's more than ample for where I'm gonna be shooting. Max 100m open shot from my blind.

If you can’t find a used kimber Montana id do a tikka in a wildcat 10/10 times over a howa
My long range precision rifle is a custom T3 I built from the action up. So I do love those actions. The issue is weight. Because they're all capable of long action cartridges, the Tikka action is heavier than the Howa or a titanium Rem700 clone... And I'm kind of trying to get the absolute lightest bolt action I could. Ounces add up to pounds, so they say.

Those Waypoint Springers have a great rep for accuracy and build quality.....thats a great price too IMO ..and you did solicit opinions...the 12in bbl idea is not a good idea..from nearly every consideration. 16in is as short as reasonable from a velocity/blast angle and as noted you have legal problems unless finding shorter factory options which arent likely

Yeah that's wrong. I looked into the walnut versions and they're heavier, 5 lbs 9 ounces

Tenda used wrong info, they got the 4.3 lbs from the synthetic stock version. Still way cheaper though that's for sure.

The 16" ones with the carbon stocks are available at Prophet River, at around $1900

What about the ruger rancher 6.5 grendel 16" barrel?

Agreed.

It’s not hard to get a Tikka lighter than what you’ve specd on your spreadsheet.

Consider a Weatherby Backcountry 2.0 Ti, titanium receiver and 18ā€ barrel chambered in .338 RPM, weighs in right at 5lbs, has a trigger tech trigger, 54 deg. bolt throw, and excellent CF stock with an effective butt pad and a bunch of other great features. Price is not cheap and more I line with your custom options, but money well spent on a very nice rifle.

Plus lots of chamberings available

I've climed up and down BC mountains and packed out more than one goat with a Savage lightweight hunter. 20"bbl .308 at about 7lbs loaded with scope. Joy to carry. I haven't had the desire to go lighter, recoil is totally managable and it's a tack driver. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get good performance in a lightweight package.

The bolt fluting is horrible though. They may have fixed that since I bought mine.

I didn’t like the howa ultralite I handled at cabelas. I thought it felt cheap af and the bolt was super rough. I’d prefer a box mag on a hunting rifle too, especially a rifle I plan on packing around. If I was getting on and off a quad or in a truck than a detachable mag would be better, but I don’t hunt like that.

I have one custom hunting rifle and I ended up there because everything else fell short of my expectations. I went through a couple different factory guns and then figured out they could all be better. My goal was a lightweight backpack rifle that could stretch out to 600 yards easily on medium sized game, maybe further if weather permits. I tried out a bunch of different lightweight rifles and found most of the light ones bucked really bad and were hard to hang on too. My bare rifle is a touch under 6 pounds and shoots consistently out a long ways and I can still spot my shots.

Personally I think the howa would do what you want it to do, other than maybe cartridge selection.
