I know that guys have had good success using these for cleaning brass. I'm looking at purchasing one to clean gun parts such as bolt/bolt carrier groups, pistol barrels, etc. I'm wondering if anyone is currently using one and how they like it; what sort of things should I be looking for in a quality unit; and where is the best place to purchase one.

Thanks in advance.

I got mine off of eBay a couple of years ago. Crest is an excellent model and you will also find some rebranded Crests there too. Avoid, avoid, avoid, the cheap "jewellery cleaners". First of all they're too small for anything but the smallest items. As well the transducers are not at all reliable in them and they have a pretty high failure rate. Yes they might put a bit of a polish on the parts but they're of little use for really seriously degreasing anything. Get one that has a heater onboard and a timer is useful too. I'm not sure if there are variable power models out there. Mine is not but it does the job very well without it. Some of the units include a free basket. Nice to have but there are other ways of suspending your stuff in the water. Get the biggest unit you can afford. I promise you will find other uses for it that you never thought of.

I use mine for all sorts of little cleaning jobs, including (the original intention of it) cleaning up SCUBA regulator parts. 4/5ths filled with water and some s
Simple Green in there, put it on heat and timer and away she goes. It'll get in to every little nook and cranny and you'll see the crud separating from the stuff being cleaned.

One other little tidbit of advise: If there's a "significant other" in your life, be prepared to be recruited in to jewelry cleaning detail.

There are nothing like sonic cleaners for cleaning firearms. We have 3 large tanks (Branson) that we use constantly. For cleaning solution we use a L&R solution as well as one from BioSol. Both work extremely well, and the hotter the solutuin is the better it cleans. You will not be disappointed.

I use HCS-200 and result are incredible, I cleaning too my old Jeep carburator and it's like new.

Very easy to use, no odor (you can use inside and your girlfriend don't say go outside !), firearms parts are like new and better than hand.

You can cleaning brass too.

I bought one of those cheap ebay ones.. after 10 mins of jury rigging the power switch (so it does not automatically turn off in 10 mins) away I went..

I use Silkshot gun cleaner in mine (cause it's free for me ;) )

The only warning I have is for anodized parts.. ultrasonic cleaning will strip the coating off if you leave it in there too long (like front sight posts etc.). you don't really need a warmer, as you can warm it up ahead of time, plus the ultrasonic waves will heat it up as well as it's cleaning..

I only wish I had a larger one, so I didn't have to do a complete strip to clean it.
(I use mine once a year for major cleaning..)

Ultrasonics - and aluminum

Greetings all,
Just a word of warning for those using ultrasonic machines.
Don't put anything aluminum in them, particularly anything with sharp edges or that has close tolerances.
The ultrasonic machines will eat aluminum and the more powerful the ultrasonic cleaner, the faster it will degrade/eat the aluminum. If you don't believe me, put a piece of aluminum foil in your machnie for about 5 minutes or so, take it out and hold it up to the light. You will see what happens.
It isn't the cleaning solution that does this, as it will still happen with plain water.
