Umingmak(muskox) defense thread ...

I could feel the caliber needs self adjusting in an upwards direction, as the bull approached. Right before he quit a .600 Nitro would have felt good. The brain shot seemed like the only option.

Calum, unfortunately i've been told i cannot hunt with a throwing spear ... because I think I would try it if I could ... I'd love to stick a wild boar downsouth for a hunt also. :D

My choice because I have the rifle & loads already set up would be my 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM loaded with either 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps for long range 500 yard shots or 300gr Swift A-Frames @ 2720fps if I could only take one cartridge weight/load along or if I had the XS ghost ring sights installed 350gr Barnes TSX @ 2450fps.

That way if your local neighborhood polar bear were to just happen to show up I would have the means of dealing with it as well...

Any standard medium calibre will do, their just like a small but very hairy cow, very good eating, you must cook it very well. Hunted them years ago in Holman Island
 
Well I'm going out this coming Sunday with a couple friends ... taking my M1 Garand Old Betty ... 30-06 winchester power point 150grainers ... should do the trick ... wish me luck! :D

Sounds like a plan. They make pretty good jerky.

If you walk up slow they circle the wagons. Sit on a rock and they'll calm down. Kill one and maybe they'll gang up on you! From afar they look like over-sized poodles: all hair! Close up, not so much. :D
 
I used my .270 win stoked with a 140 gr TBBC, did the trick nicely...

Otokiak, are there still muskox close to Rankin or have they moved inland towards Baker again??
