I have been asked to go hunt my 1st ever Umingmak(muskox) next weekend/part of the week after ... I'm hoping to get some time off work and go with this friend. I'm hoping to see some amarok(wolves) and tuktu(caribou) along the trip to shoooost also. I'm wondering what my fellow CGNer's think I should take for choice of rifle ... .223, .308, 30-06  I have shot tuktu with my .308 M1A so I'm thinking of taking that ... but really want to try out my old Springfield M1 Garand 30-06 on my 1st Umingmak ... I'll use my Sig .223 for wolves. What do you all think?

GOOD to have you here ! I would suggest the 30:06 for muskox...the 308 for caribou and the 223 for wolves and the NIKON for photos to send us poor jealous guys so we can look and drool over your successful hunt.

Your asking us???????????

My friend has been, I believe he took his .375HH. A bit overpowered but he got one. Due to all the bundling up he had to do, he ended up giving himself a nice scope eye. I guess the rfile just didn't sit on his shoulder the same. hehehehe.

Thomas Pigion says 300 WSM;)

Just hit em where your supposed to, you'll be ok.

Just out of curiosity, does the thick fur affect the bullet penetration at all?

Hey 'O, have fun you lucky bugger! I'd go 308 all the way...

Good Luck, and POST PICS when your back!

Cheers
Jay

I'd use the 30-06 or 308...

I am about as jealous now as I have ever been of another hunter. I'd love ot hunt muskox, they jst look so damn prehistoric.

Good luck and have fun!:)

Otokiak, how far from Rankin do you have to go? I thought they were closer to Baker. The reason I ask is that a muskox head would really compliment my cape buffalo, and it's not so far to go.

I have heard that spring is better season to hunt them due to longer hours of daylight. Perhaps their coats are better in the spring as well. How late in the year before they begin to shed?

My choice would be the .30/06, but either would work fine.

i used a 308, 180 gr, factory loads. I shot mine 2 times at about 180 yards, the first shot was deadly, but i wanted to make shure, The 308 was oaky, but in the north you can have pretty long shots, my thoughts, 30-06. Of course, they are not very hard to get close too.

Have fun, and take a couple sharp knives, their hides are really thick.

Anything over 243 is considered a "Big Rifle" up in Sachs. And all the sport hunters that bring up 300's and 338s are way overgunned.

The M1 would be cool though. As would the Sig, if you were a real specialist and had good bullets.

Otokiak, what does MuskOx taste like? Can you compare it to something? And make sure you dummy up the answer, I've been told a couple of times today I am not that bright.

WOW lots of replies ... that's awesome! I've decidedto use my Springfield M1A .308 and also bring my .223 SigArms along. Usually we have to go near Baker Lake, however lots of them have been spotted real close lately and the tags are out ... so I'm going between Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake to see what we can find. I'mbeyond excited now and hopefully get to shooost a Umingmak(muskox) ... and maybe my 1st amarok(wolf) too. Building a qamutiq(sled) this week with my friend and getting ready for the hunt ... damn I am seroiusly excited ... :dancingbanana::shotgun::runaway::dancingbanana:;)

Good luck on the hunt. I took mine with a .50 cal front stuffer and it rates up there as one of my all-time favourite hunts. For those that asked....they taste awesome although they are completely fat free.

A friend of mine who spent a lot of time up north just last week rated the taste as follows:
venision - pretty good
moose - even better
elk - better still
muskox - so much better than the first 3 that he's not interested in the first 2 anymore.
Just one person's opinion, but perhaps telling?
