I thiink the idea is that you can buy an HK carbine and conversion kit for 5k+, or you could buy this for half of that.

But what makes this worth "half of $5k", its no longer HK, the quality parts and barrel are no longer there. Its just a gun made in the USA in some shop. Like a JR Carbine... which is $1000.
Don't get me wrong, I would probably get one if they ever came here, but not for $2500... It would need to be ~$1500

Okay, but they are not included. Once you buy all the HK parts and bolt them on, you'll be way up there, close to a conversion price, without having an HK upper.
I hope these are priced fairly when released. I wonder if these will need to go through the lab, or just be a different brand UMP FRT#.

New make, model, or manufacturer means new frt parent entry.
What it doesn't automatically mean is new lab examination. That might or might not happen. Depends on the day it seems.
I would shoot out the parts you have before you worry about HK parts. The UMP is not an MP5, its as simple as any blowback and nothing that special. Just think the new CZ skorp VS this and you know this thing is over priced.
