I just received my new OD Green Cerakote Daniel Defense Delta Pro 5 and it’s a looker. Before I take some overall pictures, I needed to clean the barrel.

I recorded some overall impressions of this ring as I clamped it into my bench vise in the workshop. Just some observations to share with you for now. Shooting and larger pictures to follow in other posts.

Generally speaking the DD Delta Pro 7 (if you haven’t YouTube or Google Searched it) is a derivative of the Delta 5 by Daniel Defense. That rig came from the factory with a Polymer/ synthetic stock and a ‘mini’ chassis as they call it. This Pro version comes in a chassis that specifically built by MDT (of Chilliwack, BC) for the DD folks in BC.

I will spend some time yakking about my impressions and observations in this post. Shooting impressions to follow this afternoon.

First of all, the rig comes with a Magpul 10 round AICS magazine. Very slick polymer surface, and since I am a PMag fanboy, I’ve been happy with my Magpul magazines. I did not expect this AICS magazine to be any less reliable. I reload all my match boooolits to magazine tolerant seating arrangements. But that’s just me. I want everything to work and work well without any stupid surprises on the firing line.

The bolt release is on the port side rear (Navy Types will appreciate this description). It’s flush and spring loaded. I like it. Real cool.

The bolt is a 3 lug design of DD and I removed it, gave it a coat of CLP or Tri-Flow bicycle chain lube from the granola eaters at MEC. I like bugging the nice ladies at the bicycle shop about them selling machine gun lubricant.

The bolt handle looks like a one piece affair similar to my older Surgeon 591 action. It has a nice swept back angle kinda like my beloved Winnie Model 70 hunting rifle. The Delta Pro 5 bolt comes with an Area 419 bolt handle. Most cool upgrade and can be removed for other bolt handles of your choice.

The cheek piece adjustment is a knob on the right side (starboard side) that’s spring loaded. Have a gander at the picture of my fingers actuations this knob. It’s a nice touch from my KRG Bravo and XRay, as well as my Accuracy International AT. These mentioned cheek piece knob require a 2 hand adjustment to secure the correct height and then tighten up. Very nice tweak.

Have a look at the 2 pillars for the cheekpiece retention, they are machined in steps. Most secure. I like that touch. That polymer cheekpiece can be adjusted for “Toe in / out” function.

Here’s a happy surprise, the bolt body is almost the same diameter as my MTM plastic bolt guides/cleaning rod guides. Uhm, Remington/Winchester compatible bolt guides. It all works well. Nothing specialized needed for a cleaning rod guide if you have other brands at your workbench/table.

Here’s the picture of the cheekpiece removed and my fingers actuating that hardware....

I’m selecting a Delta Pro 5 with a .308 barrel of the 20” persuasion. This rifle comes equipped with an Area 419 Hellfire easily timed muzzle brake. The barrel is factory threaded for 5/8” - 24.
I ran a few patches through the new factory barrel with Otis copper remover and I’m going to the range to test my beloved DCRA NSCC handloads from my M1A Super Match and My AI AT .308 with 155 grain AMax booolits exiting around 2760 FPS.

I greased that 3 lug bolt with some white lithium grease that I hand out back when M14/M305/M1A’s were legal to shoot and enjoy and hunt.

What’s really cool about the DD rigs is that they provide a sturdy zip loc bag of tools (Allen and Torx) for the new rifle owner. What’s not to like? Most of the chassis hardware is of the T30 persuasion. Keep the T25 and T20 bits handy, though.

Okay, next post.... shooting at the range Since I only have 100 yards to shoot at, I will get back to you with my groups.

As you many of you may have noticed, my rig has an Athlon Midas Tac scope, Spuhr mounted on the 20 MOA factory picatinny rail. I will have more observations to report later on.

Cheers, Barney

Nice job Barney, looks good! Small correction, and it's super flattering, but MDT does not produce the chassis for their OEM rifle which is too bad!

looks great, whens the range test.

I got out to the range and discovered my handloads for my 3 x .308 rigs: Accuracy International AT, M1A Super Match, and M700 .308 Varmint were all too long and I encountered spilled powder and stuck boooolit in lands/grooves situation.

Have to reseat these magazine tolerant loads with my 155 Amax boooolits. Will be back on the range with my crappy bench rest techniques. I suck. But that’s another issue. Ha ha ha ha

Cheers, Barney

I’ll be interested to hear how it shoots, and what recipe you’re using Barney. I picked up a Delta 5 last year - not the Pro.

I’ve been very impressed so far. Haven’t had much trouble getting MOA with multiple rounds/loads. I’m curious how much better it will shoot with the chassis and Palma barrel, and of course a “professional” behind the trigger.
