Uncommon combination - iron sights

Hey folks,

I was invited on a moose hunt and it seems like a pretty good reason to get a new gun.

I’d like this to be an ideal bush gun… likely in 30-06, I’d prefer a bolt for its simplicity, stainless for being weather resistant… and iron sights.

That last part seems to make for a very hard to find combination…

Any suggestions? I’d like to not spend several thousand…
 
You are going to be hard pressed to find that combo less than $2,000.00 as most are going Cerekote over stainless now, and the iron sights is just so hard to find in stainless AND 30-06. It's a hard combo you are asking for I think.

If you want stainless for durability, what about just something to oil the crap out of like a parker-Hale ( https://intersurplus.com/collections/fire-arms/products/parker-hale-in-30-9 ) or a Husquvarna Carbine ( https://intersurplus.com/collections/fire-arms/products/husqvarna-1640-in-30-06-carbine ) since they likely can group better than a normal person can shoot with iron sights? [Yeah, I know, there are those who are amazing at iron sights, but often the gun with the right ammo can shoot better on the bench with a scope than 99% of shooters rested with iron sights]

The tikka arctic is gorgeous! More than I’d like to spend though.

I am fairly hung-up on stainless but could bend on the caliber. I have other guns I could use, but no stainless. The hunt is going to likely be wet, and just a tent to call home at night… I’d squirm about not taking care of it the way I’d like with something blued.

The gun doesn’t have to be a tack driver either… but of course I’d like a unicorn. My best bet may be what OkayShoiter suggested… find something that scratches the other itches and have them added.
 
If you’re okay with .308, the new Savage 110 Ridge Hunter might be suitable for you, and the price is very reasonable.

Alot of those old Husqvarna rifles and the like have likely survived many outings in bad weather. A light spray of g96 will keep them rust free and for the cost you could buy a new one each year for the next 5 years and still come in cheaper than a new stainless rifle. The other option is adding irons to a standard stainless new production rifle

This has crossed my mind. It would be at the upper end of what I’d consider spending… but I’ve never handled one in person and the express sights seem like a backup (no elevation adjustment) more than a primary system. Have any experience with them?

You should be able to swap the stock for something aftermarket if it’s not to your liking, the Savage 110 is a popular rifle and there’s lots of options available.
 
how did we ever hunt moose before ss rifles came along especially us boat hunters oh well you will have to either for go stainless or add$'s
you don't need sights and you don't need ss
you want those particulars which is fine

I like sights but I don’t care for ss never found I needed it!!
 
might as well be light weight and a reduced length for ease of handling too
oh and drop magazine for load/unload convenience
oh and CRF too
 
My 2 cents... stainless is more resistant to rust, but it will still rust if not cared for.
My main rifle is a stainless model 70 crf that I got for a steal due to some rust on the bolt handle and a small spot on the barrel. It cleaned up easily enough, but in all honesty, I'd rather have a well worn, rust riddled and reliable rifle than a safe queen out in the bush. Ymmv and to each their own.
My scopes on the other hand.... that's where my money and cautious care goes.
 
Take a look at the iron sights on a Tikka Arctic. As long as you're OK with .308 (and why would you not be), it's the best system I've seen. Compact, durable and you just dial in your range and you're good to go. As someone here once observed, those sights alone are worth the extra cost of the rifle.

Why iron sight? A.30-06 has long range firepower so an iron sight seems limiting. Am I wrong?

Yeah, I don’t expect it to be fully abuse proof… but I’ve spent extended time in tent camps for work and it’s hard on gear, especially the blueing on the 870 I had with me.

My stainless want might be a little overzealous, but it’s more peace of mind than anything else.
