Uncrimping factory-loaded shotshells

How should one go about doing this?

I tried to open up a Winchester #4 birdshot shell with a screwdriver, but it was very challenging and after lifting up one flap of plastic I gave up.

Well, I tried the screwdriver method again just now on some #2 buckshot and it worked:

I still have no idea how to get the wadding out, but it's interesting to see the shot. I've noticed that the sizes are not homogeneous. It appears there are two distinct sizes of shot within the "#2" shell.

After removing all of the shot, I was able to very easily re-crimp the empty shell just by pushing down on the plastic flaps I'd lifted up, so now I have my very first blank.

I guess I could load some pennies in there or something. When I did the CFSC/CRFSC the instructor said something about a movie where a guy loads a shot shell with dimes, uses it for a homicide, and then quips "best $1.?0 I ever spent." Dimes would be too expensive for me, but I do have a few kilograms of pennies packed into a cardboard tube somewhere, I just have to find it.

This would be a fairly stupid thing to try. First of all pennies have a diameter greater than a 12 gauge shotgun. They would get stuck in the barrel.

As for the CFSC instructor, it sounds like he's a complete moron.

I have a tool that i fabricated to cut shotshells down to 2 1/2" from 2 3/4" or 3", a similar(and probably better) tool is avail. from either BP or RS. It is not expensive, and could be used to cut case just below the mouth, don't know if this would help in your case as the case would be about 2 1/4" long afterwards.

In the great movie Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, Billly has been captured by the law. A deputy has told him that he has loaded his shotgun with dimes, and hopes Billy will try an escape, so he can shoot him with the dimes.

Billy of course escapes, and shoots the deputy with his own shotgun, killing him with the dimes.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to do this, as I don't see how dimes would be "more" lethal than buckshot.

DO NOT USE DIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take a dime and drop it in the barrel of your 12 gauge. If it is a full choke barrel the dime will stop approx 1-2 inches from the end of the barrel. We used to do this to see what type of choke the gun had. unless you have an open, no choke barrel you will most likely blow the gun apart.
If you want to make blank bangers you will need to stuff that shell full of toilet paper or some such other material, otherwise the primer will pop the powder and wad out and the powder may or may not detonate ouside the barrel.

Dimes aren't going to go very far at all, they are much lighter and are not aerodynamic at all. Hey, even if you load it up with dimes, it is still probably cheaper than shooting bismuth or tungsten. ;)

Same thing with loading it up with salt. Very short range only.......

As for blanks, smokeless/shotgun powder doesn't work, that is why they use black powder....

You realize that the blank you made is lethal at close range. The wad will be the projectile. I dont know what you are trying to achive but it sounds dangerous.

Yes, lethal at short range, but no one else mentioned it.
Dangerous plan.

I've never tired it, but I suppose a guy could open up some factory ammo and reload with salt. Or plastic or rubber pellets. Make a short tool for discourageing the neighbors dog, or a curious bear in the garden.:)

Many years ago a 12 guage loaded with salt was the standard for deterring anything not wanted around the farm.

In the interior where we have our cabin and around where I mentioned that quad trip to you, there have been some years we've had a bit of a Black Bear problem. I friend of mine that still guides close by, put me onto something he uses that seems to work quite well. Substitute un-popped popcorn for the lead shot. I have a 410 single shot shotgun that sits on the dash for 'ditch chickens' on our Moose hunts and I've tried his trick a couple of times and it seems to be effective;).
Clarification, this wasn't ment in anyway to be an option of dispatching a bear but more of a way of possibly giving it a painful non-lethal reminder to 'go away'. I guess for my friend that guides, needlessly killing a Bear that could become a clients trophy doesn't make sence. Our cabin is actually within a park and while in the area for a Moose, a Black Bear in those circumstances is more of a nuisance than anything.

I always assumed that people hand loaded the rock salt shotgun shells, but thinking about it, I bet most people just pried open a factory round. Maybe I will try some out in the back yard when I get home. Popcorn sounds better as it wouldn't be corrosive, and it would give you a movie theater feeling...:)

"...How should one go about doing this?.." Whatever for? Last time I looked, factory shotgun crimps are melted shut. You'd have to cut it with a small sharp knife.
If you need/want a blank, Winchester makes their 'Popper load'. Used for field trials. Not cheap though. LeBarons wants $22.54 per 25. Loaded with styrofoam pellets. Dangerous, but not lethal at close range. Unlike the 12 guage blanks CIL sold, long ago. Those had a 2" wood fibre wad that'd go right through a 2 x 4 at 10 yards. Had the word blank on the shell in large black letters.

I have heard the salt loaded shot shell stories for ever. But, as far as I am concerned they are just that, stories.
I have had no experience whatsoever, with the salt.
The stories may be right along there with the 36 inch shotgun barrel that took geese out of the sky at 85 yards.

Hey if it happened just once...

I got a mallard drake quite a few years ago from about 40 -50 yards with one pellet... one 7.5 pellet hit it in the brain. Not another mark on it. It just turned over upside down. The choices at the time were 7.5 shot target shells or slugs.

We were way out in the bush fishing and getting kind of hungry, but it was quite a long time ago..

I wouldn't use lead shot or any 7.5 shot on ducks now. It's "not right".
