Underappreciated Benelli s Convertible M3 Shotgun

If the shells I was using were so mild that the gun wasn't operating properly, which in fact can happen with the M4, or perhaps if the cold was so sub zero that the gun was icing up and reluctant for the same reason, I could switch to manual operation. That is the attraction for me, I mean it would be. I like backup systems.

1. Use of Low Power or “Specialty” Ammunition
If you want the option to shoot rounds that don’t generate enough energy to reliably cycle a semi auto or gas gun (rubber, less lethal, etc.), the pump mode in the M3 gives you a fallback.

2. Backup / Redundancy
In critical situations, having the ability to switch modes can mean you’re less likely to get totally out of action if something fails in semi auto.

3. Versatility
You might not always know what ammunition or conditions you’ll encounter, so having more “capability margin” is desirable.
You forgot reason number 4; it's cool.

That’s a good question.

For me, I don’t like to leave shotgun hulls around my property while hunting squirrels. Using the shotgun in pump mode allows me to control the ejection.

If the squirrels ever mass to overrun my position, I can switch to semi 😂

M4 stocks should fit in theory, but the rear end might not line up flush as it is slightly rounded vs sharp edged like on M4
