There are unfortunately a fair number of
idiots in the world, and when that
desire to achieve is mixed with a fool, a
potentially deadly mixture is created. Add a
firearm into that equation and watch out! In
general that equals a loud bang and another
name is added to the “good riddance”
statistics. Unfortunately, some people just
have to try and involve animals as an added
complication. And here is where the problem
starts.

So begins an article by Ganyana, "Of Sectional Densities and Wanabee Big Game Hunters". I thought - the hunting season is over, it's too cold to go to the range, so lets talk about stuff on CGN.

There are some interesting ideas in this article. Here are two:

the effective difference in performance due to kinetic energy between a 150grn .30-30 load used on a kudu at 50m and a 150grn load from a .300 Win Mag is basically nill. Both bullets are in the same velocity class (above twice the speed of sound but below Mach 3), have the same weight bullet of the same diameter. Momentum will cause deeper penetration with the
.300 Mag assuming the bullet holds together and expansion is the same
(unlikely).

For African use, I would simply say - “does your chosen cartridge/load combination have sufficient power to drive an appropriate bullet through an animal on a side shot." If not, then your rifle is underpowered. How big a hole it makes is largely irrelevant, provided you are using soft nosed or hollow point monolithic bullets and they do actually expand.

We often have the "is a .223/.243 suitable for deer?" threads. Does any of the advice and knowledge shared in this article change your perspective in any way? How much of what he says can be transferred to North American game? With respect to that last question, there has been some comment by the likes of Boddington and Barsness that similar sized plains game are no tougher than similar sized north american game: ie a Kudu and Elk are similar in their tenacity to kling to life.

I read both articles and my bulls##t meter wasn't going off.seems to be saying big bore going at the correct speed has the best stopping power, small bore going high speed is for proff. only.

I may have jumped the gun but, so often folks write about this stuff and it is strictly trying to drum up sales for some new "magic" bullet, so as soon as i read "monogamous" or whatever, I know where it was headed and i stopped reading. IMHO there are no "magic" bullets, there are bullets that can work "magic" because of how well they are placed. The best one could do is match the bullet and it's expansion characteristics to the game hunted, terrain(range), and this includes animals going North/South (directly towards you). Sometimes this involves a very wide, long, heavy bullet, or maybe a much smaller, faster bullet, where you want quick expansion.

Monolithic bullet-AKA solid like a cast bullet, solid copper, solid bronze etc.
No partitioning, no jacket material, no hollow point ballistic tip etc... Just homogeneous alloy of some sort. (Old school pre-magic bullet era)

It's funny you are basicly agreeing with an article that you said was full of
s%^t.

Hey 1899,

Great article, and I agree with ###ana. If it won't penetrate through the vitals and create a humane wound channel don't use it. I have seen the .223" cartridges with the right bullet do that on deer, so my opinion is unchanged.

What some may not understand is that ###ana is also saying that the 257 Bee with a 100gr Ballistic Tip crowd is a bunch of idiots. ###ana actually reminds me of Ross Seyfried a lot.

You mean.... the world.... isn't flat?

I rest my case. Both you and Ben are from Saskatchewan where there is "flat" and "not flat". Most non believers there do not believe in "not flat" as they have never seen it, though much evidence is all around them that "non flat" does exist. :D

Yes, some on here believe everything the marketers say and prolly only have experienced what they read. Most of the writers today are pushing products and most fall for it, that's the times we live in, writers like Keith and Seigfried, seemed quite genuine and didn't seem to push products as much as today, maybe readers of the day were less gullible,or it must come with age.
