Understanding Slugs...

Well I got maybe 4" groups at 50 yards, - but you see I need a lot more practice so 2" at 50 yards is probably possible, but I got good groups with an IC tube, the Remington foster slugs were inconsistent and all over the place, my brother was there he tried them out of his Ithaca 37 police gun, they are supposed to have tighter chokes, same thing all over the place and inconsistent as hell.

Why would my rifled slugs shoot better with a modified choke? Could I use a modified choke? The IC choke with 2 3/4 winchesters, just didn't print better then 12" groups at 50 yards. I change over to modified and I start printing 2" or less at 75 yards.
It's wierd.

Seems wierd, but shooting rifled slugs is not an exact science. Many slugs shoot better through some chokes other than cylinder and improved cylinder.
If yours shoot better with modified, I would go with that. Read what it says on the tubes. Some tubes made for extreme restriction like turkey tubes warn agianst using slugs.

Huntsman, are the Challenger slugs lubricated? - I think I'll take my chances with the heavy Federal slugs if I need something with extra punch - also they are cheaper than the Challenger slugs.

Nope, no lube. They have the wad attached. I've never actually tried these slugs but they seem pretty popular from the shop I bought them at.

One thing I forgot to mention with my slug gun and rifled choke tube. I was swabbing the barrel with "Borebutter".
I figured if it's used with pure lead conicals or roundballs for blackpowder, why not give it a try with Foster slugs. It made cleanup a bit easier too.
just my 2 cents

Those thousands must have mostly be out of your muzleloaders? I have shot well over 100,000 shot shells in my life and countless center fire and rimfire rounds, but I can not even imagine the need or the want or the desire to shoot more than a handfull of sabots, let alone thousands? and to not notice a plastic build up? That seems like all talk? Just talk!

Some of us like playing with what's new and seeing what we can do with it....I guess others just like to talk about things they nothing about......

I have no trouble imaging shooting a thousand or more sabots out of a shotgun but then again, when I talk about something it's because I've done it..... Yup, it sure is talk....just talk....based on experience......what's your talk about shotgun sabots based on???????

Still say the plastic build up myth is just a myth but that's only based on considerable experience.....not something so tangible as your imagination.......

I was just trying to pass along some info about my observations based on my experiences....not brag about how much ammo I've shot that wasn't germane to the topic at hand but I'll throw your medal in the mail! I'm sure your experience is extensive but you'd think it would be extensive enough not to call a man you don't know anything about a liar!!!!

The sabot that holds the projectile is very similar in construction and material to plastic shot cup wads, and is what is intended to be fired from a rifled bore. The rifled bore not a shot gun barrel. It is a rifled 12 bore or rifled 20 bore or whatever.

Huh? :confused::confused::confused:

I said sabots are shot from a rifled shotgun barrel.......wads that hold shot are typically not shot from a rifled shotgun barrel......

If you want to get into the symantics game fine.....but you knew what I meant and most people and shotgun manufacturers refer to them as a rifled shotgun barrel.....seeing as it's a rifled barrel and it fits on a shotgun....it's seems to make sense.... but thanks for the little grammar lesson:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think all this talk of plastic build up from sabots is nothing more than talk.

Since this quote was attached to my prior post, it seems that you who do not know me, called me a liar. Now I admit that I have not shot near as many sabots that you have, but just enough to know that they build up plastic.

Seems that you had no problem calling me a liar.

Sheephunter,
When you responded to one of my previous posts, I though you were calling me a liar. I may have been in error. If I have said or done anything to personally offend you, I am sorry. When I initially responded to this thread, I thought that I could clarify the difference between rifled and Sabot etc. I did so from personal experience with those products. Although I obviously have not shot as many sabots as you have, I have done one hell of a lot of all round shooting and I am in contact with many other shooters on a near daily basis. We are talking about what one thinks of plastic fouling for gosh sakes! I think that there is a little room for difference of opinions? Although I will not take back an single thing I have said about plastic through a rifled bore and I do not expect you to, with respect to your observations, I do regret that I have rubbed you the wrong way. Please accept that this as an appology. Thanks.

Thanks for posting the video. Although the Brennke is not spinng like a top or going round like a drill bit the seems to be a slight counter clockwise turn to it?

IIRC spinning is induced by air moving along ridges, after it leaves the barrel.

Fellow on here BIGRED has done A LOT of ground work on this. And yes, plastic build up was a problem.

Ok, so all fights and battles aside. Back to my origional question here, is my best bet with a 23" smooth bore barrel and an IC choke, the Challenger style slugs??

Your mileage may vary. Buy several types and try them out. That is the ONLY way you will know which one shoots best in your firearm
