A local gun collector has offered to sell me an unfired Marlin 25MN Magnum .22.

Now...I do believe him, as he's known to be a pretty straight shooter with a great reputation, but how can you tell that it's been unfired??

Is there a telltale sign??

Aren't they usually test fired at the Factory? So even if they're new they've probably been fired before.

If they've been fired only a few times and you can save a few more dollars by getting them in excellent condition then there's nothing wrong with that either! :D

Mostly ALL guns are test fired from the factory, yet there sold from dealers as new/unfired??

People sell guns on this site "unfired".

All i'm basically asking is HOW do you confirm that if you were to purchase one???

Well since you asked, most manufacturers do not deburr the rifling after it is cut.
This burr is very small and not detectable by the human eye. If you have a cross section of a fresh cut barrel and a cross section of your barrel you can put them under a digital microscope and compare the two. If the barrel was hammer forged than it is even tougher, you would have to inspect the barrel for wear and that could be almost impossible to detect. Or you could hack off a piece of your barrel and send it to a lab to detect traces of copper or lead. Like I said, not easy.

I would look for wear. The rails and hammers on my pistols show wear from being fired, even after a few hundred rounds. My lever action also has some wear on part of the action and hammer from being cycled.

Look for wear on the action parts. If it is unfired, but played with alot....finish wear on moving parts for example, then do not pay a premium for this so called "unfire" status. At the end of the day, it has had 2 owners, so I would also treat it like any used firearm which would not command any premium over an exc condition fired model.
