Hey everybody, I’m looking for an opinion on value of savage 99E in .308 that has not been fired, still has the tags on it from when the fella bought it from sears in 1981, mint except for a couple marks on the Buttstock from the cabinet and transport, tiny chip on Forestock by reciever, the light on the reciever looks like wear but is indeed dark bluing. opinions are welcome!

That's a 99E, Savage's cheap model with a birch stock, impressed checkering and trigger guard safety. There is virtually no collector interest in the 99E, so as such, it's not likely worth more than $800.00 or so to the right buyer.
I'm not disparaging the rifle; it's a good, serviceable gun.
I'm guessing it's a .300 Savage or .308 Winchester, although a few were made in .243, I believe.

Interesting. I have a '52 in .300, doesn't have hang tags or stock chip, but looks just about new. Old enough that the front sight ramp is integral with the barrel, and no scope mounting holes. Wonder what it would be worth?

That is not a 99E. I have 2 of them and they don't resemble this one. This one looks to have detachable mag.It looks like a 99c. Definitely has walnut and the strange Forend of this particular cmodel . I always found that Forend looked out of place.
Also, no 99E (economy) would be worth $800 under any circumstance. Based on condition, I would say the pictured rile is worth whatever the OP can get but to me, $600ish if it is really Unfired. It seems to have odd wear for an Unfired rifle?

It really looks like the wear these rifles show from being slid in and out of a soft case. Having said that, wouldn't be the first time light played tricks. If you google image search the 99 c , you will see some look identical to the pics. If that is a 7mm-08, you can double estimated value.

You know, looking closer, I don't see a mag release. I am scratching my head a bit now because it does in fact, look like a 99E receiver but the wood doesn't match any 99E I have ever seen. It may be a 99E with the furniture changed. I have the stocks off of a 99c series a on one of mine.the E originally came with either birch or maple and came with or without a pressed checkering. The original Forend on the E models are also a bit shorter than standard.

Edit: just did some further snooping. Charlie is bang on, it is an E. They had this style Forend in the last couple yrs production. They made the 99E from early 60's to 82. Mine were made in 67 and 71. They are nice hunting rifles but will never be collectors. If that is a .243, it will fetch a little more than the other calibers available in the E.

There's no mag release, i'm guessing it's the model e.

That's what finally clued me in lol.

The lack of a round counter window is the first tell of it being an E. Just because it doesn't have a mag release doesn't mean it's an E. The C is the only model with a release, the E is the only model without a round counter afaik
