Unfriendly highway signs in B.C.

well by the way seeing this is painfull, BUT the truth must come out the highways department didnt put the signs up! yea thats right it was groups like the BCWF etc that puts them up on the side of the road, the highways departments are way to buisy having coffee to do any extra caricular work!
No matter how it is sliced, going after, or just "observing and recording" poachers can be a very risky business, and to ask the general public, through flashing highways signs, and who have no training or experience in dealing with potential dangerous and armed criminal, is to put general public in undue risk of harm. This job should be left to trained and armed law enforcement personel.

You seem to not understand that ALL police rely on the general public to report crimes.
Members of the general public stop and prevent many, many more crimes than the police ever do.
If you are frightened for your safety, just be like the rest of them out there...... "Sorry, I didn't see anything".........But don't try to discourage others, or discourage organizations from promoting the public to do the right thing.
hell, when your neighbors home gets B&E'd, just pretend you didn't see anything, don't call the police. Might be dangerous.

I don't see a problem with the signs. If the bad guys know there are eyes everywhere maybe they won't be so bad.
Observe- See the bad guy breaking the law.
Record- Record the bad guys license number.
Report- report it to the proper authorities.
You are encouraged not to confront the bad guys. We did though and the bad guys got charged mind you there were three of us and two of them.
Another time we reported suspicious behavior to a C.O. who investigated and caught some pit lampers.

Most hunters would know how to deal with a poacher, because we in the business of recording everything around us while we are out there hunting. But the general public ? Can they tell the difference between a poacher and a hunter ? I doubt it.
Then there is the "what If" part of it, that a member of the general public, through the advice of the flashing highway signs, actually confronts a poacher, who in turn might use his gun against that person and shoots or injure that person, then who is to blame ?

Yeah, when you hear glass breaking at your neighbors house, don't investigate, since you might get hurt by a criminal. Don't call the police, either, since you may have made a mistake- Hell, it could be your own neighbor that is breaking his own window.

if you take the signs seriously thats rediculous, dont be rediculous
How often does a car and house alarms go off by accident ? Do you call police every time ? A professional criminal will not be noticed when breaking into a house, and rarily cought in the act. The same for a poachers, how often do they get cought in the act ?
A buddy of mine was out, last year, after the mule deer season closed. He passed a large buck and was parked a short distance away when he heard rifle shots. He went back and got the license number of the vehicle as it drove away. He then went up to where the buck was and there was a gut pile. He phoned the police and one more bad guy got his just desserts.
Your buddy was a hunter who knew that the hunting season was over. Would a non hunting member of the general public have known that the hunting season was over ? I doubt it. Therefore, to ask the general public, who do not know the hunting regulation, to report poacher is a fluke.

Not too many people gonna argue against that .. well I know of one .. may be two ..
Is this thread useful .. only to remind us of how unique and diverse the folks and their opinions are on this board. Some (myself any way) have gleened a little humour from it .. but other than that .. useful??. It is as useful to firearms owners and hunters as a bicycle is to a fish and it makes as much sense.

'what rock is best to bang your head against'?
Finally we come to a topic that I believe many of us feel passionate about. Many of us here in B.C. perfer limestone, the reasons are many fold. One it changes colour when it rains, it goes from white to black ( think of it as a reverse Michael Jackson ) this of course is very important in a politcally correct society. Then there is the softness associated with limestone, after enough head banging it begins to crumble and can be shaped into many lovely and interesting forms which may then be sold at hippie flea markets to the gullable tourists passing through ( if one puts a feather in one's hair you can get extra money by calling this native art ). The advantages of limestone are many, but I don't wish to stop other's from sharing their passion with us either.
What type of rock do you think should be used? say for instance in Ottawa or on a Ontario liberal mayor?
Limestone maybe too hard in those cases but I'm sure that the political correctness of it may over weigh it's disadvantages.
Soon I hope to see highway signs which read " No Taking Limestone " for this precious resource must be protected.

Those who suffer from "divergent reality syndrome" will often lack the ability to bridge to a common perspective. While the vast majority of hunters would not give a sign with the word poachers on it a second thought, those with DRS will suffer many confused sweaty nights worrying about the larger ramifications of such language. Just an aside here but BC has the largest % of DRS sufferers in the Western Hemisphere. I say cut Snowball some slack becuase he may go into shock when he see's signs sporting the words: "soft sholders" or "dangerous curves".
There is some very serious reasons for losing over 60 % of the hunters in British Columbia the last 20 years. I still believe flashing highway signs to report "poachers", gives us hunters more negative publicity, because the general public have very little, or most likely, no knowledge of the hunting regulations.

What does it matter that the thread is thaught to be dumb? no board rules have been broken, at least that I know of. Anyone not interested in it can excercise their right to move on. I say, let it die a slow death by lack of interest, locking it just seems too leftist.....IMHO 
If I was able to change those flashing highway signs, they would read, "Welcome British Columbia hunters, the pride of our society" and like that, unlike the anti poaching message now flashing. It would be to much to expect form our "political correct" society ?
