Unimog 406

There have been several questions on cost and value, two different figures in my opinion. Cost as she is shown in the photos was $12,500.00, total landed in Canada just under $20,000.00, that includes 50% of the container cost (There were 2 vehicles in it) professional washed in UK, export licences, import brokerage fees etc. Now as to value, when I have finished my extensive service so everything is working correctly. (I found out last night I need a need air switch for the 4x4 and diff locks.) and with the dedicated snow plough. Original engine hours are believed to be 1400, which is nothing so I would value her between $30 and $40,000.00 but I have no plans to sell her.

If your 4x4 has issues you may need to lubricate the air lockers, thats an annual maintenance item that nobody does then pays for. 2wd to 4x4 is a shift lever, the second position on the shift lever actuated an air switch on top of transmission. You can try it if you have somebody mive the lever, see ic there is anything to engage the air switch. Then you might hear hissing. In both diffs the air lockers rely on 50 cent o rings to work. If you hear hissing they're bad. Sometimes you inly hear the hissing if the whole diff is pressurised and yiu blow a vent hose. Ask me how i know that. Requires splitting the diff to repair but 4x4 still works.

I drained the lockers last night. The problem is in the air control switch, I do not have a mechanical lever, it leaks badly, I also need to replace that and replace a leaking T in the line before I can proceed. In the mean time I will let the locks soak in penetrating oil.

Agreed with Norbert77 said about the transfer case used to have an W163 ML (only Mercedes with a full frame other than the G-class) it an all wheel drive with high and low gear and many times people never uses the low gear and the electric motor that engaging the gear seized and need replacing.

I just put mine in and drive around the block once a month and never have a problem.

I saw a Unimog just like this one on Highway 401 around Trenton Ontario.

That wasn't me, it would take me three days to get her to Trenton. :) you have heard the fable of the Hare and the Tortoise, well my Unimog is the Tortoise, she will be unstoppable when I am finished but still slow and noisy. Spent 4 hours today freeing up rusty Hydralic couplings, some people should not be allowed to own anything mechanical.

John,

You should build an off road track at the back of your store and start giving out one stamp when people buys a rifle and if one collects 10 stamps you take him out for a 5 minutes off road ride lol.

My good buddy owns one and we go 4wheeling in it a lot. That passenger side is not friendly for tall people like me! So I doubly appreciate it when I get to drive. He just bought a U1200 so the 406 has to be sold soon.

Haha, taking the highways from Saskatchewan? Would take longer than 3 days in a Unimog. Oh... unless you drove it THROUGH the forests ;).

Just don't ever get it stuck out in the bush somehow. I bet it would be interesting to see what would be needed get it free again LOL.

A relative in Weiden, W Germany had one. It had a power take-off on the back. He connected his usual farm equipment on the back and went about plowing his fields. I still smile thinking about that!

I saw a Unimog (I believe a 406) parked at the Icefields between Jasper/Banff a couple years back. Looked in primo condition, with a custom made camper instead of a truck box, all painted the same color. Hands down THE coolest vehicle I've ever seen. AB plates on the rear and a European plate upfront. Good luck with the project!
