Unimpressed with the 1911... Am I missing some critical part of the experience?

I assumed that I would eventually own a 1911 of some type. That is, until I shot one. It was a Ruger and it left me feeling very blase about the platform. I've been otherwise impressed with the Rugers that I've shot (and own - a Single Ten), so I think it's just the 1911 style that didn't do it for me. I've since shot a GSG that left me unmoved. Am I completely off here? It seems like everyone owns one. Do I have to move up in price point before it clicks with me?

All opinions are welcome.

It is a personal choice, you don't like it...it's fine, just work with what you like that's it .

Like me, I don't like shooting a Glock, I prefer my 1911 rem R1e and my Tokarev, And revolvers...357,44,...

I have found that many people like the idea of the 1911. In actual use its often less than what the hype. A sort of cult mentality around it, and heaven forbid a person dislike them. For me I love the trigger and the history, but compared to my modern weapons it just doesn't stack up. Then again when you consider the age of the design how could it.

Ive owned a glock 21 and 22, M&P 9mm, CZ SP-01 9mm and 3 1911's. At first I was attracted to the new design and technology of the polymer guns. I figured, hey, new means better. Then I shot a 1911 and I just felt at home. More accurate for me, felt right in my hand... which was when I decided to sell my polymer 9mm's as well and went to a CZ.

After messing with all of the above, I have realized guns are like shoes... theres style and comfort and sometimes you dont get both but everyone is different and has different preferences. I think the 1911 is cool because of its history but it just turns out I DO shoot it better and like how it feels better. I like all metal guns. I really like the 1911... but I completely respect anyone who doesnt. I think anyone who argues preference is being pigheaded... theres no accounting for taste and whats better to me may suck for you. Its just life... your not a 1911 guy. Doesnt mean anythings wrong with you.

The low capacity magazines sort of suck.

The grip-safety is the stupidest invention in firearms history.

They are far more prone to jams than other handgun designs.

I had several 1911's over the years, and wasn't real impressed. Then a couple of years ago I got a SIG 1911 carry, and it just came together. It shoots great, and I can shoot it as well or better than any of my nines. I don't feel the need to have a quadruple stack 180 rd. magazine. It's one of these guns that when you look at it, it just means business. The grip safety could definitely go, but the was specified by the US government, I have a Luger that was for the 1911 trials, and it also has a grip safety on it. And you can get parts absolutely anywhere. As for reliability, I have never had any issues. Like most semi's if you are having problems, it's usually the mags

It would be kind of boring if we all liked the same thing. When it comes to the 1911 prefer an arched mainspring housing so for me the Ruger in stock form would not be ideal.

Do you have right and left socks as well? Possibly a metric crescent wrench?
The 1911 works and has since ...well 1911. Designed by the genius John M. Browning.
If new and improved is what your after then go for it, you cant tell me what a Red squirrel tastes like unless you've tried one.
If the 1911 doesn't tickle your fancy then get a Glock or some other striker.
My 1911 is obviously defective as i have tried to learn how to clear a jam and get back in business....I just haven't had one occur yet. Still waiting, shooting crappy Norc ammo too.

Maybe the ones you used were more prone to Jams. If you buy quality they don't jam. There was a lot of people in the Wars that staked there lives on these guns and they do work.

The way you feel about 1911's is the way I feel about the plastic guns like Glocks but I realize that is probably because I am old and I like guns made out of iron like they should be. Just my two cents worth here.

I have to agree with the original poster
I bought a GSG and have only put 300 rounds down range with it
I recently wanted a 1911 in 9mm so I bought a STI USPSA 9mm and have close to 400 rounds thru it, It works great no issues at all and very accurate But I'm on the fence whether I like the 1911 platform
Both of mine work flawlessly so it's not like I've had a bad experience with a 1911

Go shoot soming thing else then, what ever u like, leave the 1911 for the ret of us that love it. One day u will change rout mind

I guess you are just not ready for the 1911 yet...

Stick to your tupperware party guns.... er... I mean blocks... er.... Glocks... for now until you get some good chest hair and a beard.

:D

1911's are like a fine Whiskey, an those that love them will strongly agree with my statement.

If you don't like the capacity, get a double stack or just get longer 10 round mags. ;)
