Back in 1972-73 a friend and I split a case of unissued Savages from Crown Surplus in Calgary for around $28-$30 a pop as I recall. We sold them all over the next several yrs. I can't recall any detail about boxes or packaging, but they all had birch stocks. I would agree that beech stocks are British replacements.
Several yrs ago I acquired a 50C s/n Savage in close to unused condition (can't seem to do without one in the cabinet) which looks a lot like the one above. It has all Savage parts, incl an unserialized Savage magazine. The wood is typical reddish birch with the Savage markings on all 3 pieces. The only discrepancy from the original is the presence of the "Ishapore screw" which indicates that it saw Indian service. That is a real head scratcher as it shows none of the typical parts jumbles on the Indian No4s. I wonder why it got "Ishapore screwed" when it clearly saw no overhaul or repair whatsoever.
Many yrs ago I had the opportunity to pick over a number of unservicable Long Branch rifles for various small parts before they went for disposal. I have no recall of the serial numbers on these, but many of them had Savage marked safeties and springs. Any make of parts were used in the military repair process, but I recall that these rifles had a very high percentage of the Savage safeties.
