Sound suppressor is going standard issue - both the US and UK are going that direction. Canada is going that direction if you believe in their time table.
The official reason is that the training range templates in the US were not ready for 6.8 maximum range, so there were talks of a low pressure round for training.
The interest point is that if they pump the lower pressure round through a regular M240 aka C6 MAG58 using conversion kit, they don't need the high pressure to get the velocity.
The implication is interesting - they don't need to run high pressure in guns say the mini-gun on helicopter and still get drastically better performance than 7.62.
Things that got very stupid here - supposedly the squad 2XSAW outranges the platoon GPMG now in the US........So last year the US army was soliciting for 6.8 conversion kits for M240 GPMG.
Soon, people will be asking the question, the elephant in the room, why a 22lb dismounted GPMG that doesn't do more range than a 12lb SAW. Pretty sure SIG will have a GPMG version of the SAW down the road with a few lb more to address the issue.
