Universal Holsters

I have hundreds of handguns, but not hundreds of holsters.

Some guns need a special holster, but I have a Fobus that works well with about 20 different models and the Glock Sport holsters.

The Glock come in two sizes, Small and Large.

Small fits just about every 9mm pistol (and 40 S&W) and the Large fits the 45 version of pistols.

Here is the Small with my Glock 48.

I have a spare Large in my car glovebox. If I ever arrive at a match and discover I forgot the holster, or brought the wrong one, the Glock holster will get the job done.

And they are cheap. I paid less than $20 USD for each.

The Glock 'sport' holster

I heard only good things about the Glock 'sport' holster. The first one I bought was a .45/.10 (in a 9/.40 box), so I gave that one away. The next one I bought was defective (or so I thought, because of it's wonky retention system), so I threw that one away. Still wanted one, though, kept hearing about how awesome they were, so eventually I bought a third. I tried to use it (the third one), only to find that: a.) the third one was exactly the same as the second one, with a wonky retention system, and; b.) due to it's too-conservative dimensions, it won't accomodate higher-than-OEM sights (snagging on the draw virtually every time). What a piece of ####! Who still uses OEM sights on a Glock? Cheap bastards, that's who. You cheap bastards can buy whatever you want, but why would you recommend something so bad?

How bad is it? It makes a Blackhawk Serpa look good, that's how bad it is. The Glock 'sport' isn't the #1 worst holster I've ever bought, but it's definitely in the top (bottom?) 25.

NOT RECOMMENDED!

I have seen shooters buy $1,500 guns then buy a cheap holster only to watch their little treasurers bounce off the cement floor at our range, having fallen from their "inexpensive "special", holster. The Open style competition holsters for range use are the worst. For a hundred bucks you can buy a form fitted kydex holster that will hold your pistol in place without fear of falling out. I have seen the odd leather holster that, because the leather was either thin or well worn was soft enough to be able to mold to several style of pistols. Leather and there is a rubber type holster that is bendable but made so cheap I am not sure how long they would work. The holster pictured in the first post reminds me of this type of holster.

Can you direct order from them? Do you use it in action sports or just range carry?

I ordered from lockhart tactical, but i believe you can get them online from Amazon or ebay. Ive used it for range play and small local league night stuff. Works well. No long term use data to offer.

Thanks for this! I just ordered one on amazon.ca, around $40 shipped. I'll use it as a means to carry back and forth at the range, if/when I get into the action sports I'll look at a dedicated setup. Looks like the compact model will work with my 1911 and 226, wonder if my little bersa thunder will fit?

HooliganD,

Go to the Stealth Operator website. They have a “What gun will fit” section. The company doesn’t actually claim that they make the holster to fit specific guns. They use info from actual users apparently.

However, a skinny 1911, a wide 226 & a small Bersa will test any holsters ability!

A lot of you folks are going to be seriously disappointed. I can see a leather or leather substitute holster being somewhat universal but kyde? Hooligan buy a holster for the gun you likely are going to need a holster for. I say that owning a basket full of holsters that were found lacking, bought because I thought they were good buys. Still Alive is more subtle than I am. LOL

ps I recently bought a "Universal" holster - not the one the OP posted and I should have known better. POS would be a kind way of putting it. As a good farmer friend from Forestburg, AB once told me, "Bob sometimes you are so busy trying to save money you forget to make any".

Thanks for the advice Bob. I'm still way too far of a casual plinker and haven't even decided on a platform I would invest in to shoot in action sports or even which action sport! for $40 I'll give it a shot and if anything give it away/donate it to the club if anyone else will have a use for it. When I do get more serious, I'll spend the money on something of quality like a solely Canadian.

Yup, agreed. though if it fits any one of those well, then for $40, it's worth it. If not, oh well.

Update:
Got my Stealth Operator. It's made well of a thin kydex which offers some flex which is why I believe it is supposed to work with many different pistols. Here's a breakdown on how they fit my three:

Norinco NP29 - 5" 1911 Government: Fits into the holster perfectly, trigger guard is covered, however the holster doesn't retain it if inverted.

Norinco NP22 - Sig 226 clone: surprisingly doesn't fit, the manufacturer lists the 226 as a fit. The firearm appears to be too wide in the slide, the pistol doesn't full fit into the holster, leaving the trigger exposed. Fail.

Bersa Thunder 22 w threaded barrel: Fits well and is retained by the holster. Strange.

In summary, I think I might warm up the kydex and press it a little more narrow to grip the 1911 and little bersa better. For $40, fitting 2 of 3 ain't bad.
