Universal m1 30 carbine

Gen 3. With aftermarket rear peep sight. Sight covers serial number. Can't remember for sure but think you drift rear sight to right and there should be a set screw to loosen and then you can remove it (the sight base)and see your serial number

I had a Universal M1 carbine a million years or so ago...jammed on almost every round. Was not fond of it to say the least.

I went and traded it in on a stainless Mini 14....that was a much, much better rifle.

Given a choice between a civi Universal carbine or a USGI one, I'd take the milspec quality any day.

As for the Gen 3 Universal not accepting aftermarket 19" barrels, sounds like a good reason to avoid that generation. The Carbines are much more appealing with a 19" barrel with our laws.
 
Since I switched trigger group mine runs just ss good as my others :) but the part availability is what has me down on them. Universal Gen 1 is good to go though. No Gen 2 yet.

Not if his original barrel underneath is 19", some folks just added the extension to be certain they were within the law. I can also remember at that time there was a lot misinformation about the length that was actually regulated to be restricted. We didn't have the internet available to us back in those days and the average LEO would just make it up as they went along. They weren't trying to be contentious and often they just didn't want to appear to be uninformed.

That's how the one continuous rifled section came about. There was so much differentiation in defining qualifying lengths and extensions that they just went to the original length of the barrels and discounted the extensions as being relevant.

The terms GEN I, II and III, are simplifications of the mods to the Universal M1 carbine that were made over time. However, best to stick with these terms, KISS works all the time.

The factory 19" barrel is a curiosity. Would Universal have produced 19" barrels for the Canadian market in the late 70's- early 80's like I-J did?

Im assuming what happened is the original owner panicked and got it added on as a precaution.

I'm not sure what you don't understand about the original piece barrel being at least 19"?
 
From what I've read, the original owner added a extension to the original barrel to bring it into perceived compliance even though the barrel already measured 19 inches.
FYI some of us used to measure the barrel from the front end of the chamber forward. A dummy rd in the camber and then a cleaning rod used from there. Not saying it was the right way but backwood ways are not always the right way ;)

That brings back a few memories. I ran into an LEO a few years ago that insisted your method was the only realistic way to measure a barrel. He got very agitated when it was pointed out that the barrel started where the bolt face comes into contact with it or where it seats in the receiver. He was so upset, not angry, that he called Miramichi to get the proper barrel measuring method explained to him.

To his credit, he asked for a hard copy to be sent to him in the form of a picture. That picture is still on the wall in their back room.

I really couldn't care less what you believe or don't believe. I wasn't looking to turn this thread into an arguing match, I was looking for information on this gun.
