I've had this sling for a while, it came on a Ross I bought a while back. I thought it was a vintage hunting sling so I took it off and put it aside - but today I noticed a C /|\ !!! I can say its Canadian military, but from when? And for what? Anyone know?

There are no makers marking or date, just the C /|\ over a 3.

Looks like part of a Sam Browne to me. They can be used as rifle slings and look good on Long Lees though they are not correct

Yes, it looks to be a variation..

Hello everyone - thank you for all the responses! To think I was going to let my daughter use this as a hunting sling this season.

I have been searching for online examples for hours, and cannot find anything similar to what I have. It could be a Sam Browne cross strap, and was convinced at first glance, but there are a number of issues with that possibility:
1) This "item" is two piece, not one piece.
2) If it were a cross strap, the buckle is facing the wrong way, which would likely not jive with military regulations (down on mine, up on every example I could find).
3) The center where the two ends meet would fit on top of the shoulder, which would make it very uncomfortable and awkward.
4) The narrow half of the "item" is in shot position. If I were to extend it to the next "hole" it would extend the overall length by 16", making this too long, to use as a cross strap.

Very odd indeed, an I am wondering if maybe the Canadian military experimented with two piece target slings (much like the 1907 and Kerr no-buckle)?

John or Bearhunter may be right, and this may have been used for some other equipment or is part of a horse rig. Seems like a complicated piece of kit (lots of parts) to do something basic, so it must have a specific purpose.

Usually that sort of kit doesn't bring a lot of collector interest or has much value.

IMHO, it would make an excellent sling for your daughter's rifle.
