Appears to be for a rifle or shotgun, ......... a photo of the inletting would be a positive help.
Otherwise, might as well show a cardboard box and ask what's in it!

It is a pattern stock for use by a gunsmith with a duplicator, the wood is possibly sycamore. I am not sure which rifle action it fits but it has a decidedly Bavarian look to it. David.

I just looked a picture of an 1899 on Wikipedia - appear to have a dead flat / straight front edge that meets the metal receiver??

My guess - does not appear to be finished - or to have been finished, nor the carving / shaping completed. I see three patches of green tinged filler on left side, might be another on the right side? - so, I do not know what rifle / shotgun that is for, but likely a pattern for a duplicating machine??
