Picked this up from a friend unopened until now.

Any insight on what i have , just good for plinking ?

it looks like old 7.62 ball wrapped in bandoliers- ie use it for anything but hunting, b/c of the fmj- keep the clips and bandoliers for use later- the brass is boxer primed, so it is reusable, but I've had no luck myself resizing it- it gets stuck even with lube- the head stamp means dominion armouries, 1963 made, nato accepted( ie the cross_)
 
Canadian forces issue 7.62mm NATO ammo for use in the FN C1. The clips are reuseable but as you no doubt have realized, the bandoleers are not. They were factory sealed rubberized pouches that you tear open to get the ammo, then intended to be thrown away.
 
then you weren't shown the trick I was ie you SLIT the top of the pouch open and remove the ammo through the slit- DO NOT OPEN THE BACK that way you can do anything you want with the bandolier- this would be the top where the clip is- ie the pointy part of the ammo down-
 
CF issue "battle packs". DA(Dominion Arsenals. Also seen as DAC.) ammo was very good stuff. Reliable and accurate. Far better accuracy than the crap IVI made. Not exactly collector grade stuff, but it might have been. Not ever after you opened it though. The NATO cross means NATO standard, not accept. None of that matters at all. It's great ammo that used to be maybe collector stuff before you opened it. Very heavy on the 'maybe'.
The plastic packs were not re-used(the idea was to pull down on the wee tab to open the pouches and fill the mag via the stripper clip guide on a C1A1 or C2). Nor were the clips meant to be reused(Class C stores. That's stuff that was not expected to be returned after use), but they can be. Any .30-06/.308 based cartridges(.243, .270, etc.) will fit with no fuss. Handy way to carry hunting ammo in your pocket.
No hunting with military FMJ's in most Provinces. Lot of clubs don't allow 'em either thanks to the twits who just empty mags.
If you can't re-sized it, you're doing something wrong. Likely not enough lube. DA and IVI brass is highly sought after, well it used to be anyway, by reloaders. Has crimped primers though.
 
don't suppose you made your drill rounds by disassembling ball ammo either- used 2 pairs of pliers - can't recollect how we popped the primers or reseated the bullets- maybe with the same pliers and crimped into the cannelure= I guess we did things differently out west
 
How would something like that get into public circulation? CF still sports 7.62 MGs does it not?

E###xtremely corrosive! Will trash your M1A after two shots. For your children's sake, do not store it in your house.

That is long gone now. The GPMG at the moment is the C6 (aka the FN MAG).

I think we're talking about the same system. To me the "GIMPY" has always been the MAG, not the M1919A4.
 
Many memories as "Ammo party" stuffing C1 mags with those stripper clips. I carried that GPig 1919A4 for years. John Wayne and Sgt Rock (comic series) made it look easy. :D
Yeah, feel free to shoot that DA ammo, it's pretty good stuff as Ball Ammo goes. :)

I like that stuff.

This is a mixed lot, half came in the box, the other half I won't know what vintage it is until I open it.

It was available for sale at one point, perhaps in small quantity. I remember picking up a box exactly like this one at SAIL around 1993-94.
