Just thought I'd share an odd find the other day and maybe someone doesn't buy this particular rifle without asking whether it's rifled or not
I was with a good buddy playing with load development for his rifle and I'm debating the use of hard cast over jacketed so we were digging out our bullets from the backstop and I showed him How the hot cores I loaded him stay together better than the Winchester Grey box loads when we unearthed a 325 gr Hornady flex tip 45/70 bullet that had hit almost sideways. It still had the red gummy tip I place but the tip had been pushed sideways. There was no rifling but it does show that it rode down a pipe
Packing up I noticed another in the overhead baffle and found another perfect sideways hole of the same pattern in the baffle
This leads me to believe someone out there is extremely disappointed in how their rifle handles the Hornady loads

I can only assume it was a remlington lever gun however I don't have proof of the gun that delivered the 8-9' group

It is possible (not smart, but possible) to chamber and fire a .45 long colt round out of a .410 shotgun. If someone was especially stupid, they might have tried handloading the 325 grain Hornady ammo in a 45 Long Colt case, and fired it out of a .410 cylinder bore. It would produce about the results you describe.

I've seen people do dumber things.

My last trip to the range, I fella showed up with a long range .260 Rem. He started trying to zero his scope at 200 yards after bore sighting, but he was using ammo that he had loaded a while back. After three shots he could not determine the point of impact. I offered to let him use one of my 100 yard targets and spotted for him... the point of impact was six feet left and three feet low on the first shot, but the second shot was four feet higher... the shooter was confused and rechecked the bore sighting, then asked me to take a look... I sighted down the bore and checked the crosshairs, they were dead on center. I mentioned that he had said that he wasn't sure what the load was and suggested that he take another look at the rounds. He pulled a round from the ammo box, took a look an groaned... he was shooting .243 ammo out of his .260... he was a little embarassed and a little sheepish, but I pointed out that it was better than shooting .260 ammo through a .243.

The point is, weird stuff happens at the range.

 Hornady makes a 50 caliber MonoFlex sabot that uses a .452 Flex Tip bullet.

The perception lingers about the poor build quality of Marlin rifles produced after Remington acquired the company. No issues whatsoever with the one I recently purchased online. Excellent fit and finish. Groups as shown at 100 yards off the benchrest using Hornady 350gr RN bullets and AA2015BR powder (1800 fps MV). :d

As much as I want a lever gun in 45/70 right now I just can't get into the marlins. I've always enjoyed the Winchester guns. Loading for and shooting my buddies new to him 32 has me really craving a lever gun but I'm waiting for the case colored Henrys to hit the shelves and I want to see them in person first

However I did manage to talk to the guy. It was in fact a marlin rifle he was using. He was going to check the barrel when he went home
