Unsucessful Coyote Hunting Today (w/pics)

Thanks for the tips and experiences guys, much appreciated.

We can put it to bed, I should just put up a close up. The tracks on the left are old deer tracks and on the right are fresh tracks. I may not have shot a coyote that day but I can certainly tell the diff between deer and coyote tracks...

It snowed the night before the photo was taken, hence the dog dragging his feet. The depressions very clearly showed claws and foot pads. It is a no brainer.

when calling yotes I make a point of setting up so they have to hit the open to get around me.
it's not that tough to do here with fields and bush mix.
you end up watching your flanks more than dead ahead.

want to really have fun?
put yer fur hat on an RC car...when you get a yote coming to the call start driving :D

When Jan/Feb rolls around forget calling as they would rather be mating than eating much.Get a coyote howler and use it as they are very territorial and will run off any trespassers or male suitors.......putting baits [dead carcasses] in bush islands around fields leaving it for a few days then get a buddy to push it with you hidden covering the escape route is a good method as well.............Harold

ok put a up close pic.

Jeez, still probably going to create a dispute. Trust me, it would take a thick skull to mix up deer tracks and coy tracks in the snow. One has hooves, one has paws... this is a pretty ex. of paws vs hooves. Note the toes, pads, and claws. Please let this go.

The drags are also a really good indication of the direction of travel. I may not be the great coyote hunter but I have spent a lot of time looking at tracks and it's really not that hard. Neanderthals were pretty good at it too.

Maybe that’s y you never seen one? You spent a lot of time looking at the tracks not looking in the field lol. Also you spent a lot of time playing with your cam.

i say set up a bait pile and see what you can call in. keep the bait pile maybe 100+- yard away from you.

Ok advice...

Never hunt downwind, coyotes will always approach your call from down wind!!!
Hunt a cross wind. If you only have access to mouth calls, get up high so your scent is not at their level. I invested in an electronic for the simple reason that the call can be 50 yds away from me in the wind. Anticipate where they will come from and set yourself up accordingly. You also want to be somewhere you can see 4 or 500yds if possible. but where I am you rarely get that.

Speaking of wind, I don't even bother leaving the house if it is more than 15k, you can call them and I have in heavier wind BUT the call will travel for miles with no wond and hundreds of yards with a wind.

Always hunt for a minimum of 30 minutes, cal for a minute, rest for a minute or two... do this for 10 minutes and rest the spot for 10, then start calling again. Most of the coyotes I have seen this year have shown up at about the 20 minute mark. They don't always show up down wind of the call but will circle to the down wind side.

A tail on mono could work BUT remember a coyote will be looking for you and you DO NOT want to be moving at all. If you don't want to buy and electronic call or a decoy, you could try to rig up a mouse squeaker to your decoy and it could squeak at you pull on the string.

Don't wear blue, wear full camo or at least browns, blacks and greens, coyotes can see blue very well.

If you are serious about coyote hunting, get a better rifle and scope. A Mini 14 is a MAXIMUM 100 yd rifle. Accuracy is just not there and a coyote at 100 yds is a small target. 200 yds, forget about it.
