Well, finally got the new , upgraded priming pins for my hand primer. It took about 4 months, they also through in a 5 pack of decapping pins , for free. Here's what the new parts look like, they are now a solid piece instead of 2 separate pieces.image.jpg I think I'll get a second hand primer ... Just in case.

Just found your post while doing a search on hand priming tools. I have the same RCBS hand primer and it has not worked well since new. It is very hard to squeeze at times from fully open. I have taken it apart and reassembled many times. Can you tell me what problems you had with your priming tool? It sound like a new style rod was the solution. Does it function good now? I may consider a different model all together.

The new one piece rod is worst, it gets stuck often, almost as if it's a bit too short. I'm still using the old pin and barrel. I take it apart every 50 primers and clean the black dirt off. This helps until it gets dirty. I find the small primers the hardest. I'm gonna ditch this and get a different model. After about 10 primers it starts to bind up getting progressively worst until I end up popping the priming tray off, thereby sending goddam primers all over the room :)

Thanks for the offer but I am frustrated with mine also. Mine binds up when you open it all the way to let another primer in from the tray and start to squeeze the handle. I have tried smoothing things up with a file but no improvement. I have been priming on the press but have contaminated too many primers to continue that way. The guys at the club all prime by hand but I'm not sure what tool they are using. I think I will buy a new priming tool but not sure what system to get. Maybe a bench mounted system would be best but I like priming cases while watching TV.

There's obviously a problem with the old 2 piece system or they wouldn't have upgraded to the one piece system. Proble is, they screwed that up also . I wonder if making the spring shorter or longer would work.

I think the problem with mine is that the bar that attaches to the handle is at an extreme angle when it starts to push upward on the barrell. I have tried to smooth the inside of the tool but didn't correct the problem. I am thinking of getting a Forster Co-ax. Good luck finding a solution.

How old are these RCBS hand primers you guys are having trouble with? My reason for asking is that I've had no issues with mine (A year and a half old), but the pins look nothing like those shown in the photo. The pins are one piece, smooth, straight with no shoulder, flat on the top and, and rounded on the bottom end.

Edit, looking at the photo again it became evident that mine is the "old style" 2 piece pin and plunger, what threw me was the plunger at the top of the photo. I've had similar "sticking" after removing the flat "link / gate" to swap from large to small plastic feeders, but never an issue after reassembly. My suggestion is to try shortening the flat link slightly - either by bending the stop to a tighter angle, or putting some sort of rubber stopper on the inside of the hook. This will lessen the working angle of the mechanism.

I got mine in Dec 2014. There are 2 different pins in the picture. The 2 pins on the left are the new upgraded pins,it's attached to the barrel , making it a 1 piece system. The pin on the right is the old one , it fits in the concave part of the barrel.( 2 piece system)

My kit never came with any of the priming pieces needed to hand prime or prime on the press. Thankfully I didn't have to wait 4 months for replacements. I did end up buying a lyman hand priming tool and have never had a reason to try the rcbs. If you are looking for an alternative I have no complaints with the lyman.

I tried to shorten the stroke by drilling a new hole and grinding the end off the connection bar. My thought was to lessen the mechanical angle of the handle. It did not help. I found this video interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ3IUGKyn5w I like the looks of the Lyman and the Forster Co-ax. Forster is out of stock at Brownells but is backorderable. They have the Lyman is stock. I think I will order the Lyman.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgI took a couple more pics , here's what I think is going wrong. You see how the ball on the end of the shaft , sits in the indent on the barrel, well the ball is slipping out and going under the indent, when you release the hand pressure all the way. It's even worst with the upgraded 1 piece assembly.

The ball shouldn't slip out if you have the black bar installed. I've never had the ball fall out of the push rod (mine is two piece) except when the bar is out of it.

it doesn't fall out,it just kinda doesn't line up properly ,after a few squeezes it gets out of line and becomes real sticky. The one piece rod slips out completely. Maybe the spring needs to have more tension.
