Hi Guys,

1) I was just wondering how to do a CadPat Camo Job on my M14. I was thinking about this today as I used to work at a lable making factory that had an automated Vinyl cutter and was talking with my old Boss. I was thinking of drawing something up on AutoCad for CadPat, sending them the file and having them cut out the CadPat from some thin cheap Vinyl sheeting with adhesive, and using that on the stock when painting the stock camo. I'm thinking that I would need about 2-3 different pieces, 1 for each colour. Would this work well or not? Is there a cheaper way?

2) I was reading some threads on how to make Cheek rests out of Kydex and got to thinking that the lable factory also sells Kydex. Are they difficult to do? What type of tools would I need? How thick would it have to be?

If these two jobs go well I might have enough time to produce some for the GunNutz that may require these types of things.

Kydex - search the CGN forum for 'kydex', you will get many returns and one will link you to a tutorial on how to form and bend this material. It is done with a hot oven and pressure.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm wondering if the vinyl cut out as cad pat would be a good method. I also say a a thread on this forum or another and it illustrated using a Heat Gun, is the oven idea as good?
 
There are adhesive digital stencil kits on the market. Lauer Custom Weaponry for example (AKA Dura Coat) sells them.

If you can make your own cheaper then the ones on the market, then go for it.;) The easier and quicker way is to simply buy the pre-cut stencils.

I made my own stencils as no one had anything like that when I started doing digital camo.

I hand cut my stencil set and that was a 20+ hour job in it's own right!!!!!:eek:

I think that the Vinly Cut in Cadpat would be a waste of money as it would be a one time thing. I could have a stencil cut out of paper board and just re-use it; fold it around the stock, move it around, etc. What are the dimensions of each Block? They seem to be 5-7mm each.

As for the Kydex I'll have to see if they have black or a dark colour to paint. Is painting Kydex easy? rough up surface, primer, primer, paint, sort of deal?

P.S. I'll let who's interested know about the stencils. I might have some made up and throw them up for sale in the EE at cost for you guys.
 
I got a square of Kydex (black) from CANUS Plastics on Lisgar St in Ottawa (might be the wrong cross street). Call 'em up, send them a note, buy their products.

From watching all those car and truck fabrication shows on cable TV, I know that paint sticks to surfaces chemically or mechanically. The latter is probably better if you can't find some sort of solvent to prepare the Kydex surface.
 
Well I picked up some off cut pieces of Kydex to use for the cheekrest. The Black piece is ABS and this stuff has some texture to it too.

I just don't know what colour to use yet, but I'm just going to paint it any way. Does anyone know where exactly to drill the holes in the stock as to still permit usage of the storage holes (ie. schematics). I will have some pieces left over. Each piece is 1' x 1' I'm figuring I'll only need a 5" - 6" section to build from.
