Update on "Question about crown land and hunting and target shooting"

Hey all,

Well I just got back from finally shooting my guns on the crownland. It was about 40 minutes away after doing some offroading, well we were there. There was like nothing around. We shot there for 4 hours without anybody coming bye or anything. Was pretty fun.

I never knew a 30-06 had a kick like that. First shot was a 180 grain Federal Powershock and man was it a kick. My arm is sore as hell right now.

The .22 was fun but the scope is crap. It would loosen and just wouldn't zero. I tried lots of ammo and the only stuff that jammed alot was the CCI stingers.

Overall with the 30-06, I am not a very good shot. I have to zero the scope but it's hard because I move alot while trying to aim. Out of like 4 shots on a 1 foot target at around 200 yards, I hit the target twice but high left but then again, my scope is only bore-sighted.

At around 50 yards, I can hit the same target all 4 times but not even close to eachother. Like 2 shots might be about 1 cm away from eachother but the other 2 shots are far away and high or low. So I still need lots of practise.

Overall was a great afternoon and I plan on going back and soon, maybe next weekend. I was in a huge opening and it was great but boy did that 30-06 kick scare the crap out of me.

Glad to hear you had a good time.
Get some shooting bags to sight in and group. You need to get consistent shots. To sight in, start close and work your way back adjusting as you go. You should be a few inches high at 100 yards, then you should be close to zero at 200.

Get a pair of these and watch your groups tighten!

Yeah I need to buy some of those. I just can't do it the way I was trying. I will buy some of those and go again out next week and see what I can do then.
 
Well I think I might be flinching. I am not sure though. I try to line up my shots and pull the trigger but then my eyes close automatically.

I am pretty sure I know why I am missing. I don't breathe properly and I shake alot.

Also, at like 200 yards, my scope well everything seems very small. Like I could see the target but it was really really small. it's a 3-9x40. Thats what most of you use so how do you manage this long shots?

Yeah, you are anticipating the recoil. Do you slowly squeeze the trigger or jerk it?

You should slowly squeeze it so that when the gun goes off, it's prettey much a surprise.
 
I pretty much jerk it so I know when it is going to go off. I will try that next time I go out. I am just scared of that recoil. Thanks for the tip
 
set your scope at low power for now and breathe:p just remember you will have no recoil once you get your rifle aimed at a deer or something
 
STOP SHOOTING THE '06!

You said you are afraid of that recoil....it ain't gonna get better, and trust me.....once you get the "flinch", it's hard to get rid of. Borrow, beg, or buy a few other guns. .22, then a .17 rem, 22 hornet or .223, then a .243 or 6mm, then a .308 or .270 .....then pick up the '06 again.

Put twenty or more shots through them, working your way up to get used to recoil and how it makes you react. Jumping from a .22 to a 30/06 for someone who is recoil sensitive can and will ruin your shooting abilities for life.

Just my advice, and it's worth what you paid for it.

I have to agree with Wrong Way . work your way up . A flinch is a ##### to get rid of. I had a Bakail single shot 12 guage that bit your hand ever time you shot it . I got a flinch from that thing . I would flinch shooting .22 's . I got rid of the Bakail and shot .22's a lot . all better now . Now my main rifle is a .444 marlin . Also use hearing protection the noise can give some people a flinch .

If the 06 is all you got see if there is a local Handloader that will work up some reduced loads for you . If not at least buy the lightest bullet weight you can get your hands on . To bad they don't make the accelerators anymore those couldn't have been to hard on the shoulder

There's also the Remington Reduced Recoil loads available.
 
I will ease off the 30-06 for a bit. Next time I go out, I am going to practise alot more on the 22 and then when I get a new recoil pad, then I will try out the 30-06 again.

I also plan on buying a cliber mostly for target prac tise with like half the kick of a 30-06, so when I am up to it again, I think I will be ready for the 30-06.

MAY I JUST SAY HAHAHAHA i use them in my 30-06 all the time and i have no recoil pad and im 13 lol u musta been hoding it wrong

were you laying on the ground when shooting the .06?
Could have alot to do with the felt recoil on that baby...they are nice to shoot once you get used to them...keep practicing,it'll get better....also,when I sight in a new rifle/scope combo,I start at 25 yards,much easier to see whats going on...then you can work your way back to where you want to be....and never mind the comments from the peanut gallery from above...as long as you're having fun and getting in the practice;)

Yeah I was laying on the ground when I shot, I was also kneeling and standing up. I think it hurt the most when I was laying down.

I am just about to buy a limbsaver and hopefully it works good.
 
I shot a 338 for the first time about 4 years ago while laying down...holy crap did that thing smack me...I have since owned a few and found them not too bad when sitting upright at a bench...you should build a little bench if possible when ya get a chance,I bet it will definately feel better to ya....just a thought, and lots of practice will help as well,but you already knew that anyway
