So I show up to the WCRA range today with my Tavor (I've been a member for years) and head to the 100m range which is approved for rifle calibres along with pistol and shotgun. For those unfamiliar, the targets are placed in covered bunkers at 25/50/75/100yards. Over the past several years I've been shooting my AR15 and several other rifles out there. There's even a specific bench on the 100m end of the range for bench rest shooting.

I encounter an older gentleman, a regular who I've met on several occasions who immediately tells me machine guns are no longer allowed on this range. A little surprised, I ask.. really? I've never seen machine guns out here (thinking people had been bring out old automatics or something). Then he points toward my case holding my Tavor and says yeah, those. I say, errr... it's not a machine gun... it's a rifle... and I thought this range was approved for rifles.... He then informs me that this is a PISTOL club and that the only rifle shooting should be up to 6 rounds for sighting in hunting rifles because he reiterates that this is a PISTOL club.

A little confused and annoyed, I put my rifle back in my car and go to the pistol range and do some plinking. On the way out I pass by the 100m range and see the same older gentleman shooting a .22 cal rifle. I didn't want to get into an argument with him but I couldn't help thinking to myself... thought it was PISTOL club.

Then I get home, and check my post office box which I haven't checked in over a week, and find a bulletin from WCRA which reiterates that it's a pistol club, and that only only rifle shooting acceptable on the 100m range was for sighting in hunting rifles, and that an afternoon and 200 rounds of I QUOTE "military ammunition" is not sighting in your rifle.

Of course these are the wishes of the club, and I will respect that, but I have the right to my opinion of WTF?? Shooting's shooting is it not? as long as it is done safely and legally why does it matter what gun's being used? I'm curious if this summer I'll see the same gentlemen so opposed to "military ammunition" rifles shooting their western lever action rifles and .22 cal rifles. After all, it's a pistol club right?

Of course if anyone can enlighten me on why after all these years, rifle shooting's suddenly become a faux pas at WCRA I'm all ears, the bulletin sure didn't explain anything besides the fact that 200 rounds of MILITARY AMMUNITION was frowned upon.

***Update: Spoken with club president, see page 7 for update on this***

sorry to hear that man. tavors deserve more than that ;)

i get upset with people like the old man you mentioned. no offence. but why be so rude about it. i dont know if at the time he was, sounded to me like he was a little from your post. shame that your range has done that to you man. come to lethbridge! ours is reopen and we have a great one! not to rub it in.

Get five of your friends or however many people this club has for an executive and organize a group to take over the club. You will need to organize a large voting block to ensure your people get voted in.

The younger members need to be getting involved anyway or our clubs will start to die off as the older members, well die off. Trust me i have seen this in other non shooting organizations.

You will need to do as my last post says since eventualy they will push auto loaders off the range because they are a Revolver Assoc.

Looks like your AGM is on April 27. Time to get to work.

I wouldn't say he was rude, but at the time he kinda made himself sound like an anti by calling it a machine gun... which in my books is even worse than assault rifle. I had to bite my tongue to not ask him "what's a machine gun" and to define it. There's a bit of background to this of course, I was told by the club's firearms instructor when I joined years ago to try and not get offended by the older gentlemen who are out there shooting their revolvers and lever actions at their silhouettes since they were a bit of an old boy's club. I'd always get dirty looks or comments from them about my "ugly black rifles" when I was sharing the range with them so my friends and I would actually try and shoot around them.

I'm not posting to flame anyone at WCRA I just feel it's too bad the shooting community can't unite and just accept that some people enjoy shooting a variety of different firearms.

Hadn't heard bout lethbridge, though I've been taking a serious look at Silverdale, it's a bit further than WCRA for me though, though more and more it's looking like that extra half hour drive might be worth it :(

Fortunately WCRA does have a strong IPSC presence last time I checked so that shouldn't be a problem in the near future. Though it's kinda sad that we're even having this discussion about losing a place to shoot not because of the antis, but because of OTHER SHOOTERS!

I'd be seriously considering asking for a refund from the "club" and finding another range.

That's assuming you and other shooters can't change the club's mind at the AGM.

You know, this sounds bad, but I just don't have the time to mount a campaign and get people organized to change or change the minds of the board of directors. I do know a couple people who last I checked were on the board of directors who are far from fuddish, one of them is a heavy AR shooter himself.

Lets all gather up and heas over with our 9mm carbines and .22 conversions and shoot a couple thousand rounds LOL

Funny you should mention, I was thinking to myself... well.. what if I rolled up with my AR-15 with my CMMG .22 kit in it and my 50rd mag....

Our biggest enemy is ourselves. If gun owners can't respect other gun owners how can we expect the non shooters to. I would find a new club...

my club is a small handgun club, buy they allow any .22 rifle and a some rifle shooting. I think the concern is noise and neighbors.
