*UPDATE Post 32* An Epiphany (Or how I learned to accept the Black Rifle)

Maybe the Tavor? I've never shot one personally but people seem to like them and I've heard they are reasonably accurate. Non-restricted 5.56 and should be reliable... Not sure about the mags...

What particular rifle would you recommend, that is based in the .223/5.56 calibre, is Non-Restricted, semi-auto, reasonably accurate, and can accept standard AR mags? Essentially, I want to get a rifle that I can focus all my attention on, and shoot it regularly, rather than have a bunch of safe queens collecting dust.

Being a hunter before becoming a shooter, I never really saw the appeal either but then said to hell with it and bought a RobArms XCR. It meets all of your criteria, and you can get caliber conversion kits for 7.62x39 and 6.8SPC for it too.

I love mine, and am coming up on 1000 rounds fired. Recently, I installed the enhanced trigger parts kit and my groups at the range shrank right away. I've worked up a variety of loads for hunting & plinking and have come to expect 1" at 100 yards. The gun is more accurate than I am because the more I shoot it, the more accurate it gets. I've hunted coyotes with it and it works beautifully.

Good luck!

I'd say XCR, and get the 6.8 SPC kit too. With the 6.8 (for deer, etc.) and the .223 for cheap target practice (and small game), you should have everything you need. :)

Have fun, and welcome to the club. ;)

Oh, and the AR180b is great! :p

swiss arms non restricted is what you need but robinson arms xcr is what you should buy based on the magazine issue and interchangeable barrels.

This. ^^^

There's a reason Ar180shooter has one of my quotes in his sigline, lol! I think we've got a budding 'bromance' lately! :)

I'm strapped right now, and LOOOOOOVE my AR15, but I'm really - REALLY - thinking about an XCR. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I could justify the cash right now... but with a bolt-action Savage 10 in .308 for deer/'yotes, and an AR15 for my .223 range banging... well, put it this way, if people were making a lot of custom XCR uppers, rather than having to get them factory (and wait... and waiiiiitttttt...), I'd probably be selling my AR tomorrow.

If you want it just in the 5.56 calibre, go for the Tavor. They accept AR mags, LAR mags, a bit easier to find than the AR180. However, for a more varied platform, get the Robinsarm Arm's XCR. This way you can have the option for other calibres than the 5.56. I know you can change it for the 6.5, and believe the 7.62NATO or 7.63x39.

Maybe I'm reading the OP wrong, but isn't one of the requirements to take game up to midsized mammals....ie. deer ? If so, wouldn't that make any .223/5.56 rifle marginal or illegal depending on game laws ? Pretty much have to look at 6.5/6.8/7.62x?? chamberings. Would a more cost-effective option possibly be an M14S cut to 18.5" and mounting a scout scope ? :nest:

I've got a full-length M14s with a Leupold Scout scope that is going to be for just that purpose.

I think the XCR platform in 6.8 (0.277" dia) will satisfy most if not all big game hunting requirements for the bulk of Canada.

You're right about .223 though; as I mentioned in my reply to the SL-8 suggestion, .223 is illegal here in Alberta for big game; I can't speak to other jurisdictions though.

XCR -- because of the caliber conversion, i dont think that there is another rifle that can boast EVERYTHING the XCR can. XCR is what a hunter would buy, swiss arms is what a rich varmint hunter would buy, SL-8 is what all of us USED to buy =D, tavor is the flavor of the year, it would have been flavor of the month, but it takes a year to get one..lol
