UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Just finished up a mid-size lever at my buddy's shop. It was easy work for him to
cut, hand bend & cut off the excess metal after cold shaping, Then Tig weld the
joint. Total time for this process was 10 minutes. (Half a beer)
To re-answer sulisa's question, Don't drop the bugger hard onto the lever.
It's easy to bend. Now all I gotta do is blend the weld and re-blue.:D

Beauty!

Hmm I ordered the exact same sights for my 44 ranch hand as shell shucker has on his 45 from brownells and my front sight fits fine but my rear dovetail is to loose to secure the marbles sight so I had to stay with the stocker
Try a shim under the dovetail to tighten it up..... some brass stock or even a beer/pop can.

I havent been here for a while, seems like the discussion is still chugging along.

Here is me in the field with my RH this summer doing exploration work in the Yukon:

Nice vid Driller, the voodoo needs a plastic liner for the sights eh.... All your gun needs is a modified loop!
Who made the butt plate? I think I remember some posts about it but it would be cool to see some more pics....

the stock extension was made by andycal, he did a great job on it.

the gun rusted a bit as soon as I moved back to the coast for school, so I gave her a good oil and scrub, but I fear she may need a nickel finish in the future :D

I will take some pics and post em as soon as I can, natural light is a must for good pics.

As far as the scabbard goes, if the liner on the inside was made of the same material on the outside, it would be fine. For some reason they put a thin material on the inside, which seems prone to tearing, and when it tears it is quite 'thready' for lack of a better word.

I have the same scabbard, and I was thinking I should de-construct it and beef it up with a sight channel of some sort or like you say just a more durable material....

Read my earlier post. The folks at Skinner's Sights mention that the Rossi dovetail is a different size than most other rifles.

Order a Steve's Gunz (an all-Rossi website) rear sight ... their low flat-top works great for me.

No need to mess around with shims and goop ...

To clarify about rear sights. The low flat top sight that Steve's Gunz
sells IS the Marbles sight. I've mounted enough of them to know.
On my .357 Rossi, they were loose. When I put the Marbles Bullseye sight
on, it tapped in tight and proper. On my .45 RH, the flat top sight that
did'nt fit tight on the .357 RH, fit proper on this gun.

Those folks at Taurus have got to get their sh*t together on the finer
details of their product. IE: Better, tight grained wood for stocks and
standard 3/8 " dovetails on their rifles.

Taurus needs to improve their production quality to North American
standards to ensure a decent customer return or run the risk of
lost sales.

I actually think my 2 dovetail cuts are not aligned (not on the same plane).

Also, the cuts in general are pretty poor. Malformed edges, burrs, etc...

I removed both my sights and filed/smoothed the cuts as best I could, but now have to touch-up the bluing.

And they're still not aligned, but I think I can work with it...

;)

Skinner's Sights "take" on the dovetail issue

Based on my personal experience, I can agree with Mr. Shucker's "take" on the hit-and-miss nature of Rossi's quality-control. Fortunately for me, Wanstall's stands behind the stuff they sell and their gunsmith did a great job of bringing everything up-to-spec on my Ranch Hand ... purchased from the first small batch into the country last year ... plus considerably more.

Real gunsmiths (and Wanstall's has a real one) are skilled and busy people ... and they are rare. Anyone with a smart hard-working kid might wanna suggest the trade as a faster way to a grey market Land Bruiser. Forget being an IT expert right now and get oily and make good-vibe cash.

Wanstall's fixed the shoddy Rossi work (at their cost) and ... feeling whatever about the long time-line ... did the whole Rossi-spec / Rossi parts tune-up ... which I said I'd happily pay for ... gratis.

Comped.

Don't embarrass you or me by expecting it again ... it's a year later and ... Caveat Emptor.

However, about them dovetails ... offered without comment. Cut-and-pasted ... but with pictures missing

Required front sight height is generally slightly taller than the factory front sight. We offer a replacement front sight sized to fit the oversize Rossi dovetail which is tall enough to be trimmed to the exact height needed for your rifle. Please read the information on our FAQ page for front sight information.

For a GREAT sight picture with the Rossi 92, try one of our BARREL MOUNT
sights. The Barrel Mount replaces the factory rear sight and "Usually" works with the factory front sight. Minimal fitting required,

Shipped with a Skinner LARGE
APERTURE, (.125") the
BARREL MOUNT can accept any of our 5 APERTURES

Rossi Dovetails are "generally" about .015" larger than the standard 3/8" American DT.

SKINNER SIGHTS has responded to this need by making oversized Dovetails
for the ROSSI shooters. (.390") Because of variables beyond our control, we make these sights on the "large" side so you can fit it perfectly to your rifle.

here are the pics of the extension:

I would like to add a pad onto the back, both for recoil absorption, and for a LOP extension. I would like to shoot it more than about 3x before cringing from the pain to my shoulder haha.

I should also add that with the extension it is much easier to spin ####, as it seems nearly perfectly balanced.

Thanks for the pictures Driller,
Looks pretty beefy!
I'm thinking something similar but made out of a flexible material that is lighter weight as well.....wood and carbonfibre maybe. I think I have a broken carbon fiber ski pole around here somewhere and some epoxy.... good winter project!

I've just competed the metal work on my .45 Ranch Hand.
Marble's sights are installed along with the re-shaped mid-
sized lever, brass follower & light ejector spring. Action
is de-burred and is nice and slick.

All I'm waiting for now is my laminate stock set to show up
so I can complete this project.

Hi guys,

I've been looking at various holster options since I bought my Rossi Ranch Hand last summer. Normally I carry it in my hand or the side-pocket of my daypack or in a 24" Skinner's Scabbard (from the folks at Skinner's Sights).

I've been wondering about an idea that nobody's ever mentioned ... a way to deal with the RH's considerable weight on the belt. I'm thinking that it would normally require cinching the belt up quite tightly to prevent the weight from slipping down and perhaps creating the famous droopy-assed gang-banger look. This is a particular problem with barrel-shaped individuals (ahem) where the waist measurement is about the same as (or bigger than) the hip measurement.

Do you think that the addition of a (quick-removable) Sam Browne style belt (like on the RCMP dress uniform) that runs diagonally from the offside shoulder down and across to the holster's attachment point might be a viable idea? It would obviously be made of the same leather as the holster and accompanying (wider) gunbelt.

Just an idea maybe worth experimenting with ... :)

I've been thinking of doing something along the lines of this:

Rossi Ranch Hand Ammo

Hi All,

I recall reading some previous Rossi RH posts that talked about ammo, etc. I’m looking at both factory ammo and ‘rolling’ my own. What’s been your experience with regard to ammo choice – particularly for the RH in .44 Mag? My primary usage will be predator/wilderness defense and some hunting (I plan to buy/roll a few different loads for different purposes).

Also, I remember some posters mentioning 300gr bullets & brass from Bullet Barn. Any recommendations using a 240gr or 300gr (or any other) bullet and with which brand of gun powder? Which primers were you using… LP or Mag?

Any other ammo observations/recommendations (factory or reload)?

Great forum… regards,

Thunder-Stick
