Hello Again.
Wanted to report back the 930 project.
As some of you know I did an overhaul mod with my Hatsan MP-A and was very happy with the end result, encouraged by the sucess I decided to mod the 930 I picked up last autumn.
As you can see its the RoadBlocker version which I wouldnt normally pick up BUT the price was right, besides I wanted a shotgun with a NON pistol grip setup.
My impressions of the stock 930 was lukewarm. Right from its outrageous & useless front recoil attachment to the 14" LOP one stupid size fits all arms length stock.
And Im not even talking the lack of features for a modern shotgun design like a mag cut off switch, skinny cocking handle etc...
So anyhow heres a be4 shot with only an Aimpoint and a oversized cocking handle.
Here it is in scale with the HATSAN MP-A
Anyhow I addressed the first issue I had which was the 14" LOP.
Not everyone has long arms @ 5' - 7"unless one has monkey arms of which I dont.
My only application btw for all my shotguns is for 3 gun and IPSC. Hence I needed a short compact stock to take corners and draw up fast without it binding on my shoulder.
There is NO aftermarket short stock for the 930 right now thats in production - so I decided to get another 930 stock and mod it myself. I found out in my research that the 930s have stocks with a higher check piece and decided that would be perfect cause I use glass optics which sits higher on the receiver. Having lucked out in finding one I then chopped off 1-1/2" of stock off it - reducing the LOP to a manageable 12.5" LOP.
Please note the original stock vs. the higher profile stock.
You will also note that I didnt bother putting a recoil pad back on it since I use a tac vest thats padded hence no need for the pad. What I did place on the pad is skateboard tape so it wont slide on the tac vest and so far its all good.
My next mod was getting a side saddle for it. I originally wanted to pick up a Tac Star but didnt like how it looked on the 930. I didnt like the plastic as well so I decided instead with a Mesa Tactical. Im using it also on my 870 and Benelli M4 so why not the 930. As a side note if you own a 930 and decide to install a Mesa side saddle - DO NOT over tighten the screws or the bolt will bind in the receiver causing FTEs to occur.
As we look to the left part of the 930 you will note that I took out the original foregrip for the BobCat 930 railed forward grip. I did this because I didnt want to purchase a light mount on the front since the giant recoil thingy is there. I also found the original foregrip to be skinny and lacking in grip. If I didnt change the grip I would have installed an AFG grip under it instead.
BTW -This BobCat 930 railed forward grip made the 930 a heavy SOB. But what that means for me is that felt recoil will be reduced from that.
Inspite of the added weight to the 930 I found that I can hold the front better being that its far thicker than the stock foregrip. The hand stop on the bottom also locks my hand far better than a AFG grip or vertical grip.
Added to the rail is a Surefire light and 2 Knights Armament rail covers. Beneath the rail is a Knights Armament hand stop.
On the front end I placed a Tac Star +3 tube. I gotta say I was surprised that its an alu tube vs. plastic cause thats what I was expecting. I found by adding the +3 tube that the offensive recoil muzzle looked more proportionate to the overall look.
*****UPDATE MOD !******************
Added these pics as well...
I wanted to purchase a Side Armour Forward Shell Carrier.
The one dealer here in Canada said to me that it would be a 6 month wait !!!!!
The dealer in the US told me that I cannot purchase it from them due to their import policy.
PHHFT ! whatever.
Decided to go pro active and had a friend machine my own forward shell carrier.
The Side Armour was going to set me back around $90 CAN.(total cost with shipping) btw.
I picked up a picatinny bipod mount from Target Sports for $15. and a 2 shell belt holder for $20
The mount was milled down thinner and then the shell belt holder was bolted on giving me this pleasing result.
Its strong enough to be held up on the mount itself and yanked on in mid air ! Sorry for the blurry shot.
Overall I gotta say its looks pretty ninja mall badass. Its not for everyone - I mean that seriously cause I dont think everyone wants to spend more on the accessories than the actual gun itself.
Was it worth it ? Depends on who you ask I suppose - but the Benelli M4 is in that total price range below...
Mossberg 930: $500
All the mods: $1500.00
Does it shoot like a Benelli M4 now? LOL.
