I picked up a cheap used CZ 858 a few months back.

I set about tasking my skilled brother to make up a custom set of furniture for it to resemble an AK47 style furniture set.

I got a buddy to sand blast the junk paint job on the CZ.

He then applied dura bake to it. Total cost $0

Here are some pics of the finish.

I'm heading home for Christmas where I will pick up the stock set and do the final screw holes for the stock with my brother.

I'll post pictures once I stain all the furniture with straight Boiled Linseed Oil and get it all on the rifle.

It's going to look sweet! :D

Here is the custom Birch furniture my brother made. He said he can bang out full sets relatively easily.

More awesome pictures of the whole thing assembled and stained to follow!

Wawawema man! You weren't kidding about the ak. Man, that finish on the rifle is nice. That's how id like my cz....must......find.....sandblaster....lol

Looks great so far!
I've got a couple of questions? Did the sandblasting/Dura-bake treatment get rid of some of the poor machining marks on the 858? how does that buutstock attach?
You're brother could make alot of money if he could produce and sell that wood kit for a decent price:)

The sandblasting did not smooth over any of the rougher machine marks.
There is an almost shiny silver coloured metal under that junk paint finish.
My buddy that did it with/for me said it was very cheap metal and very pourous and rough.
This probably helped the spray on dura chemicals adhere better though.
We sprayed it on pretty thick and I think that's why it looks smoother than it is supposed to be.

The stock will have the standard screw hole right through it. Compatible with the standard CZ hardware.
Likewise with the handle.
My brother is going to notch out the little bit at the end of the stock which meets the receiver back so that the little metal cap even fits right over it.

He is actually eager to produce these. He said it really wasn't all that technical as long as he is set up for it in his shop.

He does them by hand and it is all solid wood, very sturdy. He can do them out of maple or even walnut just the same.

What do you guys think would be a fair/reasonable price for a complete set ready to drop right in? I'll run it by him.

I would pay 100$ shipped for a set.

Thats reasonable depending how he makes them and how many he makes (for production costs).

Is it me or the pistol grip looks tiny ?

Excellent work on the wood and finish. I would also say increasing the length of the grip would be more functional. The stock grip is too short and it may not be but yours look quite similar in length. Great work nonetheless.

I'll run the $200 by him.

For the previous questions:

The pistol grip I kept about the same length. The new one is a touch longer.

The difference is that it is considerably thicker. There is also no wonky curve to the grip like the original. This is one of the main reasons I found the grip to be too small. So I went with a thicker, straight cut which will fill up my hand much better.

I never had any problems with the length of the grip, for me it was always the thickness and that ridiculous scant curved shape to it.

I will post very detailed pics of the whole thing all assembled once I get back. I'm going to start staining it as soon as I get my hands on them lol So by the 1st Jan I should have detailed pics up if I'm not too hung over

More to follow!

I'd be in for a non stained set as well. Please be sure to let us know if he's going to fire up production.

Ironwood Design has a nice looking set for $175, so if he could come close to that, I would definately be interested in a set.
