*Updated in post #31* Winchester Model 70 or Browning X-Bolt?

it doesen't make it difficult for truck hunting. i have a bar with a detachable mag and don't like the DM. If your do a lot of hunting the DM eventually gets dirty and is a real ##### to cleain. The hinged floorplate is much more practicle and you can't forget your hinged floorplate at home!

A close friend of mine had some similar questions/toss-up issues with a couple of .308 hunting rifle contenders. Here's how some of the sales personnel at a shop helped resolve things:

* grab either candidate rifle; shoulder it quickly; which one points naturally?
* grab either rifle and hoist it over your head (crossing a muskeg/damp/swamp/wetland muddy field)
* grab rifle; close eyes, empty magazine of cartridges (simulate them if it's unsafe to do so), manipulate magazine catch/box/lever with hockey gloves  Okay, you get my point
* zombie invasion scenario: You fill in the blanks here
* Sit on couch, fondle rifle while watching Sarah Palin's Alaska; Which one makes you feel good?
* Which rifle platform do you DESERVE? :D I'm kidding here, but yes, the funny salesman had me laughing

Merry Chrismukkah to all!

Model 70 and X-Bolt are both great rifles. Personally, I can't stand the Winchester 3-position safety. Just a minor consideration, but it could tip the balance.

Sako , Tikka , Winchester , Remington , Cooper and all others

Did I mention X-bolt , NEVER in hundred years , too fancy , too siii*tty , never - Biggs

If you're a hunter who wants a tool for hunting, get the Browning. If you're a rifleman who appreciates a good rifle for what it is, get the Winchester. - dan

Interesting concept, however one that I fail to grasp. I am a hunter and I bought my M70 as a hunting tool. It got me a deer this year and really loved the experience. I am not saying it is better than the XBolt, that was my other choice when I started shopping for a new deer rifle, after all.

I think the OP has gotten some real good advice here, they are both good rifles, so the final choice is all his. Like it has been said before, he should go with the one that works best for him and better strikes his fancy. For me, it was the M70 Featherweight, for him it might be the Browning. I believe whichever one he chooses, he'll be a very happy camper. :)

So... I went with the Winchester

Firstly, I'd like to thank all of you guys for giving me some great suggestions and helping me decide on which rifle to get.

Secondly... the rifle. :D

After a few months of deliberation and selling a few things, I bought a Winchester M70 Super Grade in 30-06. Topping it off is a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36 mounted in Burris Signature rings in a one piece Leupold base.

I'm really happy with this setup (just finished it off on Tuesday), and can't wait until deer season!

That's a nice setup you have there, good job. I just read this thread but I went the other route and picked up the X-Bolt White Gold. I also just got it all setup the way i want and it will be going to the range for the 1st time on Sunday. Do you mind if I post a pic on your post?

I got comped the rings and bases as the store had them in stock for a long time. Why, is there something wrong with one piece bases?

The two windage adjustable screws self adjust adjust...Without warning.

The screws also have a tiny cup milled into them that accepts a tiny bump of metal that is destined to failure....I can't believe your gun store sold them to you when you obviously have the funds for a quality scope mount?

That's undesirable... But as I said... I got the rings and bases for free.

So what rings/mounts should I get then? I was under the impression that Leupold and Burris made decent quality mounts/rings.

Should I have gone for something like a dual dovetail two piece mount?
