Updated results -more with 22-250 40gr vmax - thoughts on this bullet?

Shot this one at 100 yards, did not react to the hit at all. Bolted 100 yards and folded up dead. Lung hit, no exit, just mashed the lungs.



This one was 305 yards mousing. Hit in the heart/lungs, did about 3 tight circles after I shot him and bolted 100 yards, folded up dead



Is the jacket on these bullets any thicker than the 50/55vmax? The reason I am shooting them is they have been capable of .250" 3 shot groups with factory ammo. Tried about 10 other various loads, mostly in the 1" range. Any opinions on this bullet for coyotes? Last year I was shooting them with 75 amax 223 and had runner with vital hits also...

I shoot 60 vmax from a .223 with a 1:9 twist. I love vmax bullets. IMO 40 grain pills are on the light side. Even on gophers, the 60 grain version offers some "rapid" expansion.
 
You can't argue with your success using 40 gr. but it seems light to me if you want them DRT 100%.

I use a .223 with 69 and 75 gr. or .243 with 80-100 gr for comparison.

I'm guessing the jacket thickness would be the same between 40-50,55gr.
 
I've never had an issue with that bullet in 223. Only a few dogs taken with them though. Now I use a 75 gr Vmax from a 25/06. They don't go anywhere but down
 
that was my go to bullet for my 22-250 (and 223,222 for that matter)
coyotes are weird I've shot them with every thing from 22LR to 300Win Mag and almost alway they just fall over yet every once in a while you'll get a runner (my furthest ran for most of of half a mile after a chest hit from a 155g AMAX, he ran so far that I actually though I missed then saw him fall over)
i would have no issues taking my 22-250 out with 40grainers, or yours for that matter, sounds/looks like it works
 
Thanks, I think I'm going to try a few more for a larger sample size. It's nice to see them not blow gaping holes out the opposite side like the 55gr psp I used to shoot in my model 70. I think the Vmax are 4150 fps.
 
The 50gr Vmax that I had used in my .22-250 would explode if they touched snow.
Like your 40gr, the 50gr were extremely accurate in factory Varmint Express so I stayed with them for awhile.
I won't use them anymore because they absolutely destroy fox and jacks, cut them right in half.
 
I used to use them in a 50 grain and found them extremely effective but very rough on fur. A 50 yard shot on one put a hole about 7" around. I've had good success with Nosler varmint bullets in my 204 and will try them in my 223 and 22-250 once I run out of other shells.
 
I'm not coyote killing machine but I've seen good things from the Winchester white box 45 grain JHP. No exit, no tracking, dead on impact. I wouldn't have thought your rounds would have been pretty deadly. Guess I have a lot to learn.
 
The last coyote I shot I used a 100gr Hornady BTSP out of a .243win at about 2950 fps. Shot it dead on in the chest from about 80 yards. Bullet destroyed everything inside and exited just behind the last rib. Both the entry and exit holes were about the size of the bullet so I could only assume very little or no expansion. However, it was a bang-flop and little more than a drop of blood on the fur upon exit. Seemed to be a fairly fur friendly shot.

The white box Winchester is actually one of the better hide saving bullets around. I've had bad luck with the 40V-Max in both the 22/250 and .223 on coyotes, with splash wounds, coyotes getting back up and inadequate penetration. The 40 grain V-Max is as good as it gets for vaporizing gophers.

Years ago several of us did a extended test to find the perfect combination of coyote killing and absolute minimum pelt damage in 22/250s. I don't know that we ever got the perfect bullet but the 52 grain Berger Varmint Match was as good as it got. The whitebox was just as good at closer ranges if the rifle would shoot them. Past 300 accuracy tended to go downhill fast.
 
They're both dead so it's kinda hard to argue with the end result. I do reload but for coyotes I usually use plain old winchester white box (the bulk pack stuff). It's cheap, always kills them and shoots right about MOA in my favorite 22-250. I'm not into saving the fur or I might try something different. Sometimes these leave large nasty holes in them.
 
I have shot tens of coyotes with 40gr Vmax running appprox 3700fps out of a 223. I have found that with a broad side shot or directly facing shot into the chest they perform perfectly. Small entry, complete expansion (explosion more like it) with no exit. It is my preferred load now that coyotes are worth money. I even shot a fox broadside with this load with no damage. As with any bullet, if you edge a coyote you will tear large holes and will not have quick kills! My go to 22-250 bullet is 55gr Sierra Game Kings SBT - they are fur friendly.
 
2 more, DRT no runners. Coyote was sleeping along cedars at noon on Sunday, got within 200 yards, frontal shot in the chest, no exit, never moved. The fox was shot this morning, broadside 150 yards, skull/base of the neck, no exit wound. Very pleased with this result, I'll have this one tanned.
