it came down to decision time, get a new gun (voice of Tikka 3 or Rem 700) or upgrade the winchester m70.

right now the good ole' girl in .300WM is wearing a standard hunting trim, 26in barrel, with iron sights, sitting in a Hogue overmolded stock (never been bedded) with some cheap rings on a bushnell scope (last trip to range seems to indicate the are holding ok)
upgrading would include a 26 in medium heave barrel, with threaded muzzle, a muzzle brake, return to the original wood stock (if i can find it) upgrade in scope rings, replacing the two piece scope ring rails with one piece, and eventually upgrading the scope

all in, by my calculations a $1300 investment, about the price of a new rifle, with exemption that i can slowly get the parts and work on the upgrade, new gun would require instant financial commitment

What is it you're looking for? A hunting rifle or a target rifle?
The benefit of going new would mean you now have two rifles. Assuming you keep the 70.

hmm, i would like to end up with a 1000m rifle, that i could also use for hunting, alas most of my shooting is done on a range so i need it to fit two shoes? one of the reasons to go with 26in barrel instead of longer

If you choose to keep it, get rid of that Hogue stock. If it's anything like the ones that come on the Rem 700 SPS it's a flimsy piece of crap that flexes and lets the barrel contact the barrel channel when shooting off a bipod. You don't need to spend top dollar on a new stock or chassis, something like a Boyd's Pro Varmint can be had for $250ish, I think. Then bed the action in the new stock and you'll have much more consistency over a string of fire.

if it can help you, a few years ago a buddy got an old 70 300wm from his father with a badly damaged stock. I fitted a boyds laminate stock with pillars and devcon bed, tuned a load with H1000 and 200 accubound and it shoots sub moa or better

how does it shoot? if its fine, maybe its best to invest on good glass and mounts before you start to burn out a new barrel

nothing amazing, only had a chance to shoot a box of factory ammo, 180gr Fussion (?) and between me and a buddy we were getting 4in + groups at 200m, moa at 100m, wasn't the best day to shoot either

I would keep the model 70 and build off of it.

Funny...I'd do the opposite. Shooting at the range is mostly sitting or lying down. Hunting is mostly carrying with the occasional shot. I love heavy custom barrels for the range but would hate to have to carry a nose heavy bench rig all day.

OP - Keep the hunting rifle for hunting and pick up a rifle better suited for bench or prone shooting at the range. You should be able to get a good Savage 12 within your budget.

i fully agree that two is better then one (notwithstanding the significant others permission) however in my case that means investing in a bigger or another gun safe, i'm out of space :(
as for carring in the woods, i've gone out with SMLE nr1 mk3 in full military wood, and loved it, for days on (still lighter than C9 my superiors insisted on me carring way back when) i rather have the extra few pounds then have sore shoulder from a recoil of a too light a rifle, as it was a case with another m70 i had in 30-06, just thinking about shouldering that gun was giving me an ache
