Okay.

After starting a thread and reading others I have decided that the M305 or M1A is what is going to fit my wants and needs.

NOW...............

Definitely going with an aftermarket stock.

Definitely going with a scope.

Here is the I don't know part.................

Do particular makes and brands respond better to particular up grades? Is it better to just buy a Springfield and do a few o rno upgrades OR is a fellow better of getting an offshore version and doing many upgrades?

Accuracy would be my #1 priority , function and reliability second , but a very close second.

I am thinking that a new barrel in 7-08 would be a very interesting creature.

Don't know what kind of accuracy you are after and depending on how deep is your wallet to me even the best receiver with a poor barrel and not properly tuned means nothing however, a Norinco with a nice barrel can be deadly.

I am sure other m14 gurus like Barney and Thomas can offer better advice here's some good read here:

I start off by going cheap I think most of the guys on here did the same thing
Still using my Polytech's and I'm still happy with them
Hell I'm still trying to go as cheap as I can
I can live with the Chinese receiver for my new project
A custom-made barrel is very expensive i'm paying way more for the barrel then what the rifle is worth but I'm okay with that because I have been shooting a rifle for a while now (not that there is anything wrong with the barrel or the 308)
I'm hoping that you will just buy a cheap Chinese knockoff and have some fun with that rifle first
Later you may decide to upgrade parts or even go for a custom-built
why put the cart ahead of the horse

Stay cheep? Then buy a Norc or Poly and then I can screw on a Krieger NM medium profile barrel for you. They run around $525 from board sponsor Hirsch Precision or CGN guy called peterdobson. He is the boss of Hirsch precision. Installation is not that expensive plus return mailing and you are still beneath the 1K ceiling. Or something like that. As time goes by and you budget frees up some spare cash you can upgrade the gas cylinder, stock , and other nice to have components. :)

Personally for a build around a Krieger match barrel , I would drool over a dream M14 built on a Smith, LRB, or M1A , but with a kid in post graduate school,'them nice brands ain't gonna happen.

I just delivered an M14 clinic today with my teaching Norc M14. I dream of an M1A build someday when my kid can finish school and set up his practice. :)

Cheers and keep helping them noooobs

Barney

I am in the process of having A custom M14 barrel made for me because it is a one of it is very expensive approximately $900 just for the barrel

I don't want to discourage you
but there's nothing wrong with starting off slowly

I would opt for an early (pre 2009 ) Norc longy.
There are some amazingly accurate home tuned rifles out there, many capable of sub 2moa and quite a few hovering around 1 to 1.5.
An old Norc, one of Barneys Clinics and some reloading equipment will set you up for far less than the cost of a top end rifle new stock and scope.
There are a lot of top end rifles that still need tuning and a healthy diet to perform well.
The beauty of the Norc is if you screw it up...........meh! Get another. Screw up a 2000 dollar rifle and there will be tears.
Now if you have the means to own an LRB............that's a different story all together ,,Phwaaaaawwwwwwwwww :)

Can talk about the LRB, but i can talk about a SA NM M1A, this rifle is a work of art, everything fit to perfection, and accuracy wise, there is no limits, i am working on loads and each time i go shoot it, i am srinking those groups, i honestly believe the potential for .5 MOA with that rifle... When my SA M21 M1A get here with the Krieger 1 in 10 barrel, it should be even better, i know they are expensive but God those rifles are absolutely flawless and i think those are still use in conflicts around the world because they still are one of the most accurate semi still today... In my book that is... But i am not alone sharing this... JP.

Also don't get your hopes up that you'll do .5 MOA. The best M-14s and shooters struggle to hold TRUE 1 MOA in competition at Camp Perry, so much so that the amount of times it's happened can be counted on your hands. By true MOA I mean, all distances out to 1000.

So far the potential i huge, and this rifle is worth reloading for... I agree with you MOA to a 1000 is exceptional... But getting .5 MOA to 300 metres would be great, the concept of this rifle will live forever... JP.

So, do you figure a 7-08 M305 would be a nice toy? I think it would.

Gonna upgrade the barrel anyways.

7-08 Would be friggin awesome there would be a lot of guys drooling over their keyboard
If your heart set on a full-blown custom job go for It
you might save a little bit of money by taking the clinic and getting some help from you guys there

To be honest the only reason I'm getting the M14/338 is I have hunting partner Who is a retired M14 mechanic to help me haahaa
Plus I have too many 308/m14 to hunt with now having one of My old M14 re-barreled in 338fed will still leave me with another more or less stock Polytech still in the safe

A 7mm-08 M1A would be a dandy hunting rifle. Cost you a big pile of money and it wouldn't be any better than a .308 M1A though. Just changing the barrel would likely cost you as much as the difference between a 'Standard' M1A and a 'Loaded' M1A.
An M305 is not an M1A. It's a Chinese copy of a U.S. battle rifle. It's not a target rifle either.
As always, it comes down to how much money you want to spend. A Standard is going to run you the better part of 2 grand before you do anything.

Well, a lot of my bolt rifles already cost be a big pile of money, so why stop?? ;)

Actually from what I have been reading it won't be too bad at all when compared to many other toys.

Sure a 7-08 a 308 and 338 would all do the same on game , but there would be a cool factor as well, just imagine one of these rifles with 7mm-08 Rem only stamped on the side. ;)

Why be the same as everyone else?

1) For a custom made M14 send email to Herronarmes their CGN sponsor I believe they are the only one making custom M14 barrels
No sensing calling around looking for a bargain in this case
let them know what you're after in a m14 barrel
They will not start making your barrel without a 50%
Just remember the barrel is being made just for you so be patient don't expect it in the mail a week later
Make sure you post pictures and let everybody know how you're making out because there are other guys thinking about a similar build
We are all wishing you good luck with your project

You might as well order your receiver well your at it, that can same time to get in
