Hmmmm, I thought the more recent GSG 1911's had steel guide rods already. I thought I read some reviews dating back 2-3 years about their original potmetal guide rods breaking so they changed to a metal guide rod. I just ordered a GSG 1911 today and will likely pick it up in the next week or three, so I guess I'll find out for myself.
My "research" seemed to indicate that the original GSG 1911 models had several 'minor' faults that have largely been resolved in current production. Remaining weak points are the plastic sights and the finish not standing up to wear and tear very well.
EDIT: re guide rod, cwaccessories (apparently don't ship to Canada) designed an aftermarket guide rod/spring/spring plug and barrel guide to address the breaking issue on the OEM rod and rotating bushing problem. ZRTactical Solutions (who appear to distribute through blueline here in Canada) seem to have a copycat version as well. Both of these aftermarket systems are designed to eliminate the original barrel set screw that had been an issue what with coming loose and even getting stripped out.
