Upgrading scope. *Got it! Pics and review in last post*

Okay I have decided on a scope, the Bushnell ERS. Now I need a new mount.

My last mount was a 30mm Accuracy International 18 MOA for the rifles flat picatinny rail. I was planning to get another one for about $250 but I saw some less than rave reviews. Someone mentioned they can easily crush a scope and there was no documentation or torque specs with mine.

Also I plan on putting a level on it and I don't want it to snag. The Spuhr has a level built in and looks really nice but they are around $500!

What else is there for a 20 MOAish mount for a flat rail? Or does someone make a sloped base for an Accuracy International I could easily install? All I know of is the Burris Zee rings and I don't even know if they come in 34mm.

BoBro, ADM, NF....

Does the rifle have a base/rail that you can easily screw off??? If so, then a 20MOA rail will be easy to find.

I don't have the specs for it. I will take the old mount off and look at the base. I thought they were almost permanently attached but I'm not sure.

Mystic Precision those rings can add 20 MOA on a flat rail?

Also does anyone know anything about the AI mount? How does it compare? That's all I have for reference in terms of quality.

You may not need a canted mount. All the 3.5-21s have 29 mil elevation. That should leave atleast 10 mil of up from your 100 yd zero. My DMR is mounted as low as possible in NF rings and Burris XTB bases. I believe I ended up with some cant even though a straight edge across the bases shows them level with one another. I have 19.4 mil of up from my 100 yd zero. I can't shoot my 168s far enough to use that much elevation. The bullet would be tumbling like a drop kicked football and falling with the same trajectory. The reticle alone has holds nearly to 1000yds with that anemic load. A heavy bullet will not need elevation dialed for 1000 yd plinking. You can check out Cadex for their unitised mount, I think it comes in canted versions but honestly even 10 moa will get you enough up to dial past 1000 yds.

Hey Roddy, if you do decide to replace that AI mount, Near Manufacturing out of Camrose makes some of the nicest mounts available. He would work with you to get exactly what you want.

Not sure where you would have heard bad things about the AI mount but mine works and replacing it with a Spuhr would not gain me anything really. It crushing the scope tube sounds like a tall tale, tons of these floating around in military service around the world.

Torque specs for AI mounts: Rings are 18 in lbs and mount bolts are 31 in lbs. I run an Accuracy first level on mine.

Also rails on AE's are removable from the receiver, AW's are not.

A thread on Snipers Hide and a gunsmith. Plus I crushed the Vortex acording to their warrany department. Vortex is replacing it. It's kind of embarrassing but that's what the scope technician told me.

On another note what brand of torque wrenches are you guys using? I can't find anything that works well at Canadian Tire.

Fat wrench I picked up on sale for 50$. I'd have gone with an adjustable borka torque wrench, but kinda pricey and I needed it now rather than a week later.

I've used 3 AI mounts myself, they all worked fine and they are a decent deal for a solid one-piece mount.

I use a FAT wrench for all my scope mounting needs, works well.

Got everything put together. Thought I would give a little review in case someone else is interested in a similar setup.

So I went with the Bushnell ERS 3.5-21x with the G2 reticle. Got it from PlainSight Solutions. I would highly recommend them. Great to deal with and very helpful.

For the mount I looked into everyone's suggestions. Thank you again for all the advice. The AE rail is somewhat unique and not standard sized so it is difficult to replace.

Near Manufacturing looked like they had great products but he is bit backed up with a government contract. The Burris XTR rings only came in 1" and 1.5", not the 1.25" height I needed. I decided to go with Spuhr. It was quite pricey but it had a built in level and it is something I will never have to worry about.

Also picked up a FAT wrench. Worked great and gave me a lot of confidence in my torque values being accurate.

To get the eye relief I needed with that rail I needed to cantilever the mount off the end of the rail. It still seems solid enough with three of the four cross bolts.

Here's a fuzzy picture:

The mount is very solid and the built in level is very low profile so it won't snag but it is partially covered by the scope while shooting. It is still usable though.

I have only shot out to 100 meters so far but I have glassed lots of distant objects and I like it. Getting the rcorrect eye relief has not been an issue. The magnification adjustment ring is very smooth and easy to use unlike some other scopes where it is very stiff.

The reticle is very clean and useful. While the illuminated reticle on my Vortex was nice I did not use it much and killed a battery or two leaving it on. It's one less thing to worry about. I still have to figure out and set the zero stop.

My only complaint about the scope is the parallax adjustment knob just has dots for markings. I realize factory distances marked are sometimes incorrect but there is no way to tell which dot you are set on.

If someone has an older HDMR I would like to know what distances the dots are supposed to work at so I can write them in with a paint marker or something.

Anyways if anyone had the patience to read through my boring review here are some pics of my new setup at my "range":

Groups are pretty good for me. Not to make excuses but the extremely dry Alberta dirt was not very solid and tended to settle after each shot and may have contributed to the larger group. In the winter I put plywood down but not when there are crops in the field.

178 Amax bullets with 43.5 grains of Varget in Federal cases. I hope to be able to complete the 0.75 MOA all day challenge this year.

Well thanks again for all the help. Everyone on here has been great.

Next accessories I am in the market for are a better hard case and a smartphone scope mount to record video of my shooting.

If anyone has a marked Bushnell 3.5-21× parallax knob the could send me a couple pictures of that would be great.

I'll get some pics of my DMR parralax knob for you, its marked in yards or meters, don't know or care which. Your setup looks great though, I think you'll find the G2 reticle a good balance with the FFP.
