This^^^^^^^^^^^^ or TruGlo TFO's is the way to go.
 
I got some luminescent paint from Glow-On [ http://glow-on.com/index.html ] to redo my M&P40 front sight....One small bottle would probably do 100 front dots. If you fill the hole with paint it glows very nicely as long as you charge it up with a flashlight or somesuch first.

I also put XS BigDot sights on my M&P45 and the front sight was a b!tch to take off, and I required professional help to get the new one on. If it's not a familiar job for you, I don't recommend it as a DIY.
 
Exact same thing happened to me with my M&P 9mm - the white dot in the front sight fell out.

It happened at the range - and I was stuck shooting at a black target with absolutely no sight picture on my front site. Well at least I got to recycle my target for my next range visit!

Word of caution - if you change-out the sights yourself - be very careful when sliding off that rear sight - make sure you do not harm / lose the little spring and silicone cap that underneath! The spring is actually the firing pin block spring - and if it, or the cap on the end of it is lost, you will be waiting a loooooong time for a replacement - ask me how I know .....

The safest solution by far is a little drop of White-out in that indentation on the front sight.
