Upgrading to a Vortex Viper: What do I need to know?

Hi everyone!
Looking to upgrade my scope. The one I have on my 30-06 is a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40. Has perfermed well. But looking to jazz it up a bit. I sometimes have the opportunity to go near the lake where we hunt and could get longer shoots (300-350).

I noticed Cabelas.ca has the Vortex Viper 4-12x40mm. I've looked through one at my local dealer (they only had the 3-9x40 version, but it was extremely clear compared to my older Prostaff).

I've compared it to a Nikon Monarch 3 (side by side at the store) and to me, the Viper was much clearer.

I like the crispness of the image. It's remarkable. Any caveats I should be aware of? It's only impossible that I will be also switching to a 300 win mag sooner than later...

Cheers!

David

If all you want to do is jazz it up a bit, you could glue on some streamers and tassels and be further ahead in the long run :p

Hmmm, alright. So...I did some re-thinking, checked out my previous Prostaff.

I might (still undecided) instead go get a Prostaff5 4-16x40mm. Still within budget...but was wondering what the difference between a ProStaff vs ProStaff5 is? Obviously, 4-16 vs my previous 3-9 is different, but what about the crispness of the image. Is there a difference or could I just wait for a Monarch? The thing is...all monarchs available have BDC on them and I'm not a fan. The local shop has a 4-16x40 with moa reticle.

The same could be said for Nikon scopes, they're not exactly what I would call bullet proof lol.

I've been hunting with a base prostaff model for 11 years and it's been very good to me. Just looking for an upgrade.

I finally went to my local sporting good shop and I purchased a Prostaff5 4-16x42mm...I had a 500$ budget and stayed within it. I didn't want a BDC scope (the circles seem way too big) and its the only one that didn't sport them. I kinda have regrets of not getting a Monarch though...Not sure if the price difference would of been worth it. I am hoping to be able to purchase a new rifle with this bad boy, that's why the "strict" budget.

According to TFB the nikon warranty will continue to be honored:

Well all I know is that approx. a month ago I sent a brand new nikon to their warranty service center in Mississaga and Canada Post advised it had been delivered. Countless phone calls and e-mails have resulted in nothing. The best I can get out of them is a recorded message saying that their offices are closed. So now I have a gun that I had been looking forward to using, with no scope(lucky I have several other guns to use). All I know is no more nikon products ever and certainly no Vortex either ( had enough of their crap in the past).

Just passing on my experience with nikon. Think I may have to try a Burris, as I have had horrible luck with vortex and nikons, but thought I would give nikon one last chance, looks like that was a big mistake.
