Well, this wknd,Gilly came down to visit me here in Wainwright. He and I set out in hopes of wingshooting a nice Ruffy,Sharpie or maybe a Hun or two.................. :? :( :( .
We saw not one dang Ruffy, three very skittish Sharpies and one covey of Huns which were on private land.We pushed bush for atleast 6km and saw nothing..WTF :? We each got a rabbit but the bird population was absolutely NIL!! It can only tell me that the predator numbers are doing very well :x ,I know what I'll be doing this winter :!:

Huntsman

Everytime I've been out for chickens, and lots when I haven't been, I've seen huns in greater numbers than ever before... full limit every time.

This has been everywhere from Cochrane to Balzac to Vulcan to High River to...

Haven't run into any grouse yet, but I really haven't had time to look.

I've been pretty fortunate here, I brought home Ruffs every time I've gone out, except this past weekend with Huntsman. The Hungarian Partridge seem very healthy this year, I've been seeing herds of them all over the place here, mostly in wheat and barley stubble. The rabbit population is reasonable too, I guess. But It does look like the ruffs are on the bottom end of the cycle.

The coyote population around here is very healthy. Once I get my .223 barrel for my encore.........the shoosting wil begin.

I've taken my daughter out to local conservation area to do some birding (with binoculars) and we've gone off the beaten path to see if we could flush a ruffed. Nothing. A few years ago we'd always see one. I guess Gilly is right that they're at the bottom end of a cycle. My buddy was up near Kirkland Lake for a week after Bullwinkle but did some upland and also nothing.
Lots of waterfowl, though - in addition to the Mallards and Canuck Geese we saw Wood Ducks, Buffleheads, Mergansers. No Scaups, yet...

Hey, when's the last time anyone saw a Bobwhite? :?:

Southeast Alberta right along the Sask. border has shown lots of Huns this year. More than I have seen in the last 4 years in fact. I was down in September and could have easily come home with 10+ in one day if it were legal. Instead it was 10 in two days :D

Any Alberta hunters been around Magrath/Raymond area for pheasant? I hear conflicting reports about this area, but nevertheless, I'm anxious to check it out as I've never been south of Lethbridge. Thanks... :)
