Upland gun barrel lengths

Pineridge near beautiful Lake Scugog.

Will be hunting the early upland season using a Spaniard 16 ga. sxs with amputated barrels @26". Hermanos Zabala.

For many years hunted with the 20 ga. silver pigeon version of your 101. 26" barrels with interchangeable chokes. Kept skeet in both barrels most of the time for grouse/woodcock.

The breed is Pudelpointer. The std. for the breed is a longer wirehair coat but there will be a smooth coat like mine occasionally in a litter. I requested a smooth coat as I don't waterfowl hunt any more. They are great dogs for family life, good with kids and don't shed which is a huge bonus over the lab we had before. When I bought mine, there was only 3 breeders in Canada so are not seen often. I've only met one person with mine that even knew what a PP was and they guessed it right. They are very biddable dogs but require a lot of exercise. I normally walk 5km per day but am on holidays the last 3 weeks and have been 10. They love water.

never seen one like that. why no more waterfowl they are made for ...

never seen one like that.
The smooth coat is not std to the breed but they do come occasionally in a litter. Any smooth coat dog w/o a beard bred cannot be used for registered litters. I requested a smooth coat and would do so again but I do wish he had the std beard.

I used to duck hunt a lot but got away from it. Too much hassle with boats, swamps, getting up early, etc etc. I just prefer to upland hunt now instead. Less hassle and enjoy it more with the dog.

Upland for me is mostly ruffed grouse and snowshoe hares in pretty thick bush. As such, my go to is usually my Browning BPS 20 gauge upland special with the 22" barrel and straight grip. Most wing shots are a quick point and shoot with not much opportunity to swing, so the short barrel works pretty well for me. That said, I do wish the gun had a 24" barrel to make it a great all round upland gun. Even with the 22" barrel, in total length and balance it compares to a break action gun with a 25-26" barrel, so it's really not as short as the 22" barrel makes it seem.

agree 26 or 28 for sure. Michael McIntosh daid it best about the gun weights too. He wanted a gun to wiegh no less than 6 pounds. Otherwise they were not good to swing. He even built his 28ga to be 6 pounds

I recently purchased a 30" Fox Sterlingworth 12 bore. Chris Dawe did a very nice job on a refinish and opened up the chokes to IC/M. At less than 7.5lbs, it no lightweight grouse gun but I an see a gun like this being a very good choice for pheasant. I will still carry it for later season grouse though. I like it a lot, esp after the work Chris did to it.

Paul, let's see that Fox.
Here's Dagmar at 4 months. Since then was a great "help" in cleaning up the long bones at deer camp. Pointed her first grouse, first pheasants, many crows/geese/squirrels/herons and once a peregrine falcon.

Dagmar's looking good John. Was just in the kennels today where the breed was developed. Getting close to puppy time for me. Another English or Llewellin is in my future. Oh, and to stay on subject....27.5" or longer.
