Upland Hunters - What Hearing Protection Are You Wearing These Days?

I wear Norths ( Lee Sonics)when I am upload hunting, they have been around for many years .
They are plugs with a shut off system in them .
The original ones available to civics were built using an aluminum body, but the newer ones are made with a plastic body .
They work great , and you can hear very we with them
I eas wearing Walkers fir a while when big game hunting but normally do not wear them.
Cat

I remember them being used by duck hunters, I mean they told me about them but I was too young and poor to afford such class. Plugs normally don't fit to well into my earholes but I'll check them out if only for info purposes.

I only wear hearing protection when waterfowling. There tends to be a much higher volume of shots in that scenario and occasionally you get a "ringer" when someone shoots over your head etc. In that case I use Peltor muffs with gel pads so they seal tight but dont drive the arms of my glasses into my head. Same for shooting clay.

Upland, I never wear anything but eye-pro. I run my dogs silent and like to hear the grass swooshing or twigs snapping to know where they are.

Nothing for the longest time, then foam plugs here and there, now using Surefire EP-7's with the Comply foam tips. They stay in place beautifully, are comfy even under a toque, and you can open the center filter cap to let a little more sound in (which is what I do). If I'm glassing from a stand, I'll just leave the filter caps in place and enjoy a decent reduction.

Howard Leights electronic muffs, I have tinnitus so if I’m doing any shooting I’m wearing ear pro. If I’m walking I just turn the volume up to the level I’d be at without them on as it keeps the foot noise at reg levels. If I’m sitting and waiting I’ll turn the volume up so I can hear things moving in the bush.

I'm looking forward to trying my HL's this year, now that I've got them fitting my head nicely.

Up until now, I've always hunted with those ear-plugs-on-a-rope. They hang around my neck until I need 'em, but thats not a very good method for upland bird hunting where you don't have much if any heads up.

I've looked at these, but they leave me with questions... Do they reduce harmful noise without the filter cap in? Obviously they reduce MORE noise with the filter cap in place, but do they reduce noise at all without them? Also, Can you hear like normal with the filter cap out, or is sound still muffled a bit, just not nearly as much as with it in?

I'm 52 next month and to be honest unless I am at the range I have never worn hearing protection. Actually I don't even where it when running the saw. At one time my hearing was well above normal now I would say my hearing is about the same as others. Do I recommend wearing it yes as my hearing has degraded over time although probably still better than most people. I do make my son wear protection, but hard to teach a old dog new tricks

Peltor EEP-100

Anyone know where to get these. Every place is showing zero stock.

A few years ago I bought my Peltor TEP-100 set from a CGN site sponsor vendor: SRS Tactical. I have received great service from them. They are currently showing "out of stock".
Maybe send SRS Tactical an email, or call them on the phone (I have spoken with them on the phone and they are nice people), and ask to be placed on a waiting list for the next shipment.

It never hurts to do this. I have been pleasantly surprised over the years with many vendors (including many GCN sponsors) that these businesses will carry informal waiting lists and will call you back at the front of the cue for when the item is restocked.

IMO the Peltor TEP-100 is an excellent product and I use it regularly.

I just wear my hearing aids because i never wore ear pro for the first 50 years of shooting . Wife just told me to turn that g-d damn tv down .

Yes, they reduce the noise even with the caps open. Not nearly as much as when they are closed (which I've used on the pistol range without muffs quite comfortably) but it definitely takes the edge off the sound without killing your situational awareness or making your ear canals sweaty, so they're fine for those few shots during hunting season.

Waterfowling or other high volume shooting I would use electronic muffs, at the range I use both plugs and muffs with rifles and usually one or the other with pistols (but there are separate ranges so pistols only on the pistol range).

Love mine, I upgraded to gel pads and can wear them all day without getting a sore head/ears from the pressure of them on my head all day. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade to any ear pro.

I don't use anything, but probably should. I've used electronic muffs in the past, but find that I get too much background noise to be able to properly hear grouse clucks.
