My folks live in Selkirk and I would like to take my older male out to hunt as the ptarmigan numbers here are very low, have been for awhile. Are there any opportunities for sharptail within a reasonable distance or do I need to consider going south of Winnipeg?

What about Sandy Lands (I think that's the name) just south of Vita? Or you could go just north of Pinefalls.

If you are looking for sharptails, you would be best to go further north into the interlake. Ruffies and spruces are still plentiful, though I don't know about near Selkirk. There's lots of them east of there, that's for sure.

I drive up to Eriksdale quite often from selkirk to my property and have been seeing less and less Gamebirds every year in the interlake...kinda sucks. This year I have only seen 1 ruffie and 1 sharpie....5 years ago was really good...I am not sure what happened with the birds....I wouldn't mind baggin' a couple.

Way too wet in the interlake the past couple years. Upland bird populations have suffered as a result. But still healthy pockets of birds that can be found. Only problem is that friggin outfitters have decent private land all tied up.

Thanks, I appreciate the replies.

I was also wondering about Hun/Gray patridge numbers and huntable populations about an hours drive from Selkirk. Are there any or do I need to look farther away to find birds? I may have a line on getting permission on private land, dad knows some farmers, and my wife's uncle is from southern MB.

Grouse come and go in four year cycles. But as one poster has said the Interlake has been way too wet for years. I haven't hunted there for a while now.

Sandilands was good for grouse last time I hunted there two or three years back - some places better than others, its a big area. But the OP was also asking about Huns near Selkirk and I can't think of any around there at all.

Anybody hunt Mars Hills near Libau? That might work for the OP if any birds there. Closer to Selkirk than Sandilands.
